The church of St. Mary the Virgin, anciently the church of the Benedictine priory here, is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave (part of the ancient priory church), aisles, south porch and an embattled eastern tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and a fine peal of 8 bells, dating from 1712 to 1853: from an inscription over the porch it appears that a large portion of the tower was pulled down during the Civil War of 1646, and that it was restored in 1696. The church contains a handsomely carved stone pulpit, with an arm attached to it holding a, stand for an hour-glass; in the church is a fiat stone with an inscription in old English characters to Richard Chichester esq. ob. September 12, 1540, and to Thomas Salmon, d. 1818: there is a finely carved chancel screen and an elaborate oak screen between the chancel and south chapel, both with panels bearing the linen pattern: the ancient octagonal font has a canopied cover of carved oak of the 15th century: the chancel retains a piscina and in the west wall of the nave is an aumbry: the porch has an ancient stoup: the church was restored in 1873—90 at a cost of £1,261, and affords 500 sittings. The registers data from the year 1569. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £208, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter, and held since 1892 by the Rev.
