Historical Description

PINHOE is a pleasant village and parish, with a station, about 1 mile south-east from the village, on the main line of the London and South Western railway, and is 2 ½ miles north-east from Exeter and 168 from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Wonford, union of St. Thomas, county court district of Exeter, rural deanery of Aylesbeare and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Michael is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Early Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch, and an embattled western tower, containing 6 bells: the first bears a legend in Latin, the two next are respectively dated 1691 and 1655: and the tenor has the admonition “Pres not thy self”: two treble bells were added in 1894 and bear the inscriptions “Alleluia” and” Peace be unto you”: the nave and chancel are separated by a fine carved oak screen, groined, and consisting of eight bays, and restored by Hems and Sons, of Exeter; the oaken alms-box bears the figure of a serving man, in the costume of the last century, and supporting himself with a stick in one hand, the other being extended for alms: there is also a highly enriched wood pulpit: a new organ was erected in 1880 at a cost of £210: the church was thoroughly restored in 1880 at a cost of £1,700 and will seat 200 persons: in the churchyard, opposite the porch, is a large stone cross on a pedestal of the 14th century. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a vicarage, net yearly income £180, with acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1863 by the Rev. Frederick William Pulling B.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners and the vicar are owners of the rectorial tithes. There is a Mission Church in connection with the parish church, and a Baptist chapel erected in 1887. In 1655, £175, given by Grace Bampfield and others, was laid out in the purchase of a house and 13 acres of land at Broadclyst, now let for about 30 guineas yearly; five-ninths of the rent of this estate belong to the poor of Pinhoe, and the rest to the poor of Stoke Canon and Thorverton parishes. The poor of Pinhoe also have £4 10s. yearly, being the rent of two acres, left by Humphrey Wilcocks in 1686, and £6 6s. 8d. from £230 8s. £2 ¾ per Cent. Consols, purchased with £200 loft by John Land in 1817; they have also two yearly rent-charges for educational purposes, viz. £1 (and 30s. a year for bread), left by John Sanders in 1720 and £2 left by Sir John Elwill. John Reynolds or Rainolds D.D. a learned divine and eminent controversial writer, was born here about 1550; he was sometime Dean of Lincoln and subsequently president of Corpus Christi college, Oxford, and having greatly distinguished himself at the Hampton Court Conference in 1603, was selected by King James, with other learned men of his time, to translate the scriptures from the original Hebrew into the English language; he died 21st May, 1607. In 1001 King Ethelred was defeated here with great slaughter by the Danes, who burnt Pinhoe, Broadclyst and other neighbouring villages. In remembrance of this event, a pension of a mark (13s. 4d.) a year is still received by the vicar of the parish. On Beacon Hill, a commanding spot near the church, are several houses. The manor was part of the royal demesne, and is inscribed in Domesday Book as containing the farms of Monkerton, Pinpound, Langaton, Harrington and Wootton; it was successively held by the De Vallibus, Multan, Strech, Cheney, Walgrove, Elwill, and other families. Lord Poltimore P. C. who is lord of the manor, Capt. Sir Frederick E. W. Hervey-Bathurst bart. of Somborne Park, Stocksbridge, and Frederick William Arundel Sanders, Henry Wilcocks and Robert Dunsford esqrs. are the chief landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, red sandstone and clay. The chief crops are cereals and grass. The area is 1,757 acres; rateable value, £6,469; the population in 1901 was 952.
