The church of St. Mary and All Saints, formerly appropriated to the Abbey of Tavistock, is a spacious edifice of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches, and an embattled tower containing a clock and 6 bells, all cast in 1739 except the second, which is dated 1735: the church retains a magnificent 13th century rood screen, restored in 1887, under the direction of Mr. R. Medley Fulford A.R.I.B.A. of Exeter, by Mr. Harry Hems, at a total cost of £350: there are monuments to the Harris family, who resided here for more than four centuries; and there is also an Early Norman font: the church was restored in 1866 at a cost of nearly £2,500, and has 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1591. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £250, including 47 acres of glebe, situated at Prawle Point, with residence in the gift of the Dean and Canons of Windsor, and held since 1895 by the Rev. The neighbourhood is noted for its limestone and marble. Here are extensive fortifications, called Stamford and Fort Staddon, and others at Bovisand, Mount Batten and Turnchapel for the protection of Plymouth.
