Historical Description

PLYMTREE is a parish and small village, 4 miles south-east from Cullompton, on the Great Western railway main line, 5 north-west of Sidmouth Junction station on the London and South Western railway main line, 12 north-east from Exeter and 8 North-west from Honiton, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hayridge hundred, Cullompton petty sessional division, Honiton union and county court district, rural deanery of Ottery, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The Clyst has its source at Clyst William in this parish, and the parish is watered by the Weaver and Tale streams. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style of the 15th century, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells: there is an ancient and handsome panelled screen, with fine paintings of saints and historical personages, the latter including Henry VII. his eldest son. Prince Arthur, and Cardinal Morton; on the screen the Bourchier and Stafford Knots also occur: the ancient carved oak benches are of the same date as the screen: on the west front of the tower is a group of the Virgin and Child within a canopied niche; and the piers of the arcades have similar niches: one of the bench ends in the aisle exhibits a shield, bearing a merchant’s mark intertwined with the letter “G,” probably referring to Thomas Goodwin, a former landowner here: there are 200 sittings. The ancient churchyard cross, the head of which was discovered in 1897, buried in the churchyard, was restored and replaced in position in 1898, as a memorial to the Rev. George Gilbert Gutteres M.A. rector 1892—7. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £200, with 34 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Provost and scholars of Oriel College, Oxford, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Edgar Hay M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. The rectory house of cob and thatch, dates from the 15th century. Here is a Congregational chapel, built in 1850. The charities amount to about £70 yearly and are distributed in clothes and tickets on tradesmen. In the ancient Great Church House there are five sets of rooms for the occupation (rent free) of poor persons, in addition to the Vestry Room, which is still reserved for the use of the Church. Hayne House is a large mansion, the property and residence of Thomas Henry Baxter esq. who is the chief landowner. Other principal owners are Col. J. Barry Slater, of Eastbourne, Richard Hall Clarke esq. of Bridwell House, Mrs. R. G. Collins, of Cullompton, and Rev. R. M. Davy, of Topsham. The land is all freehold. The soil is loamy, chiefly in pasture, and there are large apple orchards, Plymtree being famous for its excellent cyder. The area is 2,185 acres; rateable value, £2,949; the population in 1901 was 359.

Church School (mixed), built in 1872 at the cost of the Rev. Thomas Mozley, formerly rector, for 150 children, & now owned by the Bishop, Rector & T. H. Baxter esq. as trustees for the church, by purchase from Mr. Mozley’s trustees; average attendance, 64.
