Historical Description

POWDERHAM is a parish and village opposite Lympstone, on the river Exe, 2 miles north-west from Starcross station on the South Devon section of the Great Western railway and 7 south from Exeter, in the North Eastern division of the county, Exminster hundred, Wonford petty sessional division, St. Thomas union, county court district of Exeter, rural deanery of Kenn and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Clement is an ancient edifice of red sandstone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, with aisles of equal length, nave, aisles, north vestry, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells, dated respectively 1676, 1696 and 1764, the remaining three being added in 1888, at a cost of £111: the oak pulpit was presented as a thank-offering by Col. Francis Haygarth in 1881: an organ was erected in 1878: on the north wall is a modern brass to the Rev. Daniel Nantes, 52 years rector here, d. July 11, 1877: under a low arch at the end of the south aisle is a tomb with recumbent effigy of a lady in tight-fitting dress, covered by a mantle, and wearing a square plaited head-dress, traditionally said to-represent Isabella de Fortibus, Countess of Devon, temp. Henry III. ob. 1292, but it appears probable that the figure was intended for the Princess Elizabeth, 5th daughter of Edward I. and wife of Humphrey de Bohun, earl of Hereford, ob. May 5, 1316: the nave of the church and one of the aisles were erected by Sir William Courtenay and Margaret (Bonville), his wife, and on the piers are the arms of Courtenay, impaling Bonville and Hungerford, with supporters: in the chancel are memorial windows to Lady Harriet (Leslie), daughter of Jane Elizabeth, suo jure countess of Rothes (by her 2nd husband, Sir Lucas Pepys bart.) and wife of William, 10th earl of Devon, d. 16 Dec. 1839, and a fine monument to Lady Elizabeth (Fortescue), wife of the 11th earl of Devon, d. 27 Jan. 1867: there is also a memorial window to Thomas Peregrine Courtenay esq. d. 7 June, 1861, besides other stained windows and some remains of a carved oak screen: the church was thoroughly restored in 1861, chiefly at the cost of the 11th earl of Devon, when the chancel was length ened and the interior re-seated: there are now 160 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1575; marriages, 1559; burials, 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £259, including 98 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1877 by the Rev. the Earl of Devon M.A. of Merton College, Oxford, and prebendary of Exeter. Powderham Castle, the family seat of the Courtenays, Earls of Devon, standing on the western bank of the estuary of the Exe, is a structure in various styles, erected in the 14th century by Sir Philip Courtenay, lieutenant of Ireland: until about the year 1700 it was very strongly fortified, and during the Civil War was garrisoned for the King: in Dec. 1645, it was unsuccessfully attacked by Fairfax, but was taken by Col. Hammond in the following year; the most ancient portion now extant is built of limestone, with a mixture of red conglomerate and of a white material locally called “Ex-mouth stone:” the castle appears to have originally consisted of a long parallelogram flanked at different parts of its length by six towers, four of which are still standing, and the other two have been rebuilt with brick on the same sites; the fabric has of late years been much modernised, but the ancient battlements and windows which have survived the alterations sufficiently indicate the original character of the whole; the interior has very spacious rooms, containing some good family portraits and a collection of paintings by the old masters: the adjoining park of upwards of 300 acres is well wooded and stocked with deer. The Courtenays, earls of Devon, have been seated in Devonshire nearly 700 years: one branch of the house of Courtenay were counts of Edessa; another A.D. 1150, became allied to the Royal Family of France, and through this alliance three members of the family occupied the imperial throne of Constantinople A.D. 1204: in England the Courtenays have been allied to the Bonvilles, Bohuns, Spencers, St. Johns, Talbots, Veres and the royal house of Plantagenet, and the name appears in the original list of the order of the Garter: in the Wars of the Roses they adhered to the Lancastrian party, and in the reign of Henry VIII. Henry Courtenay, earl of Devon, was created Marquess of Exeter, but this title became extinct in 1556, and that of Earl of Devon, assumed to have lapsed at the same time, remained dormant until 1831, when it was revived in favour of William, 3rd viscount Courtenay, who thereupon became 10th earl of Devon. On an eminence in the park is a building called The Belvedere, erected in 1777, and consisting of three hexagonal towers, 70 feet in height, commanding magnificent views of the surrounding country, the river Exe and the English Channel. The Earl of Devon is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is loamy, except in the higher part of the parish, where the red sand commences. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips, but a large proportion is permanent pasture. The area is 1,418 acres of land, 4 of water, 23 of tidal water and 170 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,702; the population in 1891 was 203, and in 1901 238.

EXWELL, half a mile north-west, MELLANDS, 1 north, and BLACK HEATH, half a mile north-west, are places here.

National School (mixed), enlarged in 1885, for 40 children; average attendance, 27.
