Historical Description

PYWORTHY is a village and parish, 2 ½ miles south-west from Holsworthy terminal station of a branch of the London and South Western railway, in the Southern division of the county, Black Torrington hundred. Holsworthy union and county court district, rural deanery of Holsworthy, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Swithin is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and western tower containing bells, all cast in 1758: there are two memorial and other stained windows: in 1885 the church was new roofed, reseated, refloored and heated at a cost of £1,450, and a stained window erected by the late W. Sanders esq. in the south aisle: there are 300 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1653; marriages, 1681; burials, 1682. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £320, including 172 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1862 by the Rev. Samuel Wm. Tagert B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Here is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, erected in 1846, with sittings for 100 persons, and a Bible Christian chapel. There is a charity of £15 a year, bequeathed by the Rev. Robert Beckley, formerly rector of this parish. The late Rev. Thomas Hockin Kingdon also bequeathed, in 1853, the interest of £370, to be distributed to the poor in clothing. Mrs. Richard Ford, of Pencarrow, Bodmin, Cornwall, is lady of the manor; H.R.H. The Duke of Cornwall and York K.G. J. H. Walcot Vowler-Simcoe. of Penheale Manor, Egloskerry, George Graham White and Herbert Napier Kingdon esqrs. are the principal landed proprietors. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and roots. The area is 5,688 acres of land and 12 of water; rateable value, £2,509; the population in 1901 was 455.

By Local Government Board Order, 14,689, a detached part of East Bridgerule parish was added to Pyworthy, March 24, 1884, for civil purposes.
