Upexe History

UPEXE is a tithing and hamlet, in Hayridge hundred, 2 ½ miles north-west, with a station on the Exe Valley branch of the Great Western railway. The ancient chapel, which had for several generations been desecrated and converted into dwellings, was acquired from the owner, the late C. A. W. Troyte esq. and in 1888 was restored from designs by Mr. R. Medley Fulford, architect: the building is of the Early English period, c. 1280—1300, and has lancet windows on both sides and a good south doorway, and the east end retains a small piscina; the original east window, which fell to pieces on the removal of the roof, has been replaced by a new one in the Decorated style; and a bell gable has been erected at the west end. There is also at Upexe another ancient chapel, which was restored about 1901, and is served by the rector of Rewe.
