Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
ROUSDON (Ralph’s Down) is an ancient parish on the south coast, 3 miles south-east from Colyford station on the Seaton branch of the London and South Western railway and 6 south from Axminster, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Colyton, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Axminster, rural deanery of Dunkeswell and Honiton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Pancras, for many years a ruin, was rebuilt in 1872, at the sole cost of the late Sir Henry William Peek bart. from designs by Messrs. Ernest George and Vaughan, architects, of London, and is a picturesque building of the large grey flints quarried on the estate, with dressings of Bath stone, in the Early Decorated style, and consists of chancel, nave and western tower with octagonal bell turret: the nave occupies the site of the original church, the chancel being an extension to the east, and the tower, open to the church, an addition westward: an ample vestry occupies the upper portion of the tower: all the woodwork, including the roofs and floors, is of oak, and all the windows are stained: in 1893 an octagonal lantern was erected above the chancel arch: in the church is a fine monument erected by the late Sir H. W. Peek bart. to his father James Peek esq. late of Watcombe, Torquay, and his father-in-law, Wm. Edgar esq. of Clapham Common, Surrey: the church will seat 105 persons. The register, dating from the year 1603, was included in that of Axmouth, but is now kept separate. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £293, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Sir Cuthbert Edgar Peek bart. and held since 1881 by the Rev. John Curgenven M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge.
The Rousdon observatory, erected in 1884, is 11 substantial building of stone, and comprises on the ground floor a computing room, dark room for photographic and spectroscopic work, and a room containing a transit instrument, sidereal clock, chronometers and other appliances; the equatorial room, surmounted by a revolving dome 16 feet in diameter, contains a telescope with an object glass 6.4 inches aperture, standing on a massive iron pillar, and is furnished with clock motion, micrometer &c. The principal work engaged in at the observatory is the observation of variable stars, which has been carried on continuously for more than 16 years, and the results obtained are communicated to the Royal Astronomical and other learned societies. The meteorological department, organized in 1883, is furnished with a good collection of modern instruments, and the amount of wind, rain and sunshine is recorded on instruments exactly similar to those in use at Greenwich and Kew; a “Richard” balance registering pluviometer, automatically recording the time and quantity of rainfall, has been in action for 7 years past. The observatory is a second order station of the Royal Meteorological Society, and the instruments are read at 9 a.m.. and 9 p.m. daily; the collection is the best and most complete in the South of England, and sixteen annual volumes of results have now (1901) been published. Astronomical and meteorological observations are regularly carried on, and the results of the investigation prove that the climatic conditions of this district are among the most favourable to be found on the south coast. Mr. C. Grover is the assistant observer. In the parish is a reading room and library for the inhabitants of the district.
Rousdon, erected by the late Sir Henry Wm. Peek bart. J.P. is a noble mansion of grey flints with Purbeck stone dressings, in the Queen Anne style, from designs by Messrs. George and Vaughan, architects, of London; the south front is about 200 feet in length, and has a tower, about 90 feet in height, at the north-east angle, and on the north side is a porte-cochere, supported on columns of Purbeck marble and Beer stone: the east front is about 100 feet in length: a noble apartment in the mansion is fitted up as a museum, and contains a collection of curiosities from almost all parts of the world: the stables and offices form an extensive range, in the same style, with a lofty tower at the entrance containing a clock: the views from the south front of the mansion, which is situated near the coast, are magnificent, and extend from the Start point on the west to the Isle of Portland on the east. There are gas works and water works, supplied by a pumping engine at the bottom of the hill. The trustees of the late Sir C. E. Peek bart. are sole landowners. The soil is flint with marl; subsoil, chalk. The land is chiefly pasture, with a small cultivation of roots and oats for home consumption. The area is 255 acres; rateable value, £600; the population in 1891 was 58.
