Historical Description
SALCOMBE is a small seaport town and civil parish, formed in 1894 under section 1, sub-section 3, of the “Local Government Act, 1894,” from the parish of Malborough; it is about 5 miles south from Kingsbridge; it is in the Southern division of the county, Coleridge hundred, Starborough and Coleridge petty sessional division, Kingsbridge union and county court district, rural deanery of Woodleigh, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The town is built on the margin of and facing the harbour, the entrance to which lies between Prawle Point and Bolt Head. Salcombe is a sub-port of Dartmouth and the chief port of the Kingsbridge district, and has its own registration of shipping, a custom house and a coastguard station. The harbour is capable of receiving vessels of 400 tons, and it being free, affords a convenient and safe retreat in any weather, and vessels may ride in perfect security under the windows of the house. The sea fishing is excellent, and produces scallop, as well as crabs and lobsters in large quantities, and bass, mullet, pollock and mackerel. The climate of this district is very mild; the American aloe blooms in the open air and oranges, lemons and citrons reach a state of ripe perfection, and this circumstance, combined with the beauty of the surrounding scenery, has of late brought it into favour as a watering place. The sands afford safe and pleasant sea-bathing: rabbit and wild fowl shooting can be enjoyed in the immediate neighbourhood. Gas works were erected in 1866 at Shadycombe. A steam launch plies from Kingsbridge to Salcombe daily, and steamers to Plymouth leave twice a week from Kingsbridge, calling at Salcombe.
The town is governed by an Urban District Council of 9 members, formed under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 & 57 Vict. c. 73), which takes the place of a Local Board established in 1880. The ecclesiastical parish was formed Nov. 12, 1844. The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1843, at a cost of over £2,600, is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a western tower containing a clock and one bell: the stained east window is a memorial to the late Earl of Devon P.C., D.C.L, d. 18 Nov. 1888; two others are memorials to the sons of Major-Gen. Birdwood, and there is one in memory of Elia, widow of John Fitzroy (de Courcy), 31st baron Kingsale, d. 5 May, 1893: the pulpit is carved: a new chancel, with side chapel, vestries and organ loft, designed by the late Mr. John D. Sedding, architect, were added in 1889, at a cost of £1,900: there are 470 sittings: the churchyard is tastefully laid out and planted. The register of baptisms dates from the beginning of the 19th century. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £270, with residence, in the gift of Keble College, Oxford, and held since 1897 by the Rev. William Llewelyn Herford M.A. of Keble College, Oxford. The Catholic Apostolic Church, in Fore street, consists of a large room over a, store, arranged as a nave and chancel; it has been redecorated and handsomely refitted, and has 120 sittings.
The Wesleyan chapel, in Island street, was erected in 1849; side galleries and a music gallery have been added, and the interior has been re-decorated and reseated throughout, and will seat 500 persons. The Baptist chapel, in Courtenay park, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, erected in 1867, at a cost of £1,100, and affords 300 sittings. The Brethren’s chapel, in Fore street, erected in 1862, will seat 200 persons. The Cemetery of about 2 acres, with a lodge containing a waiting room and mortuary, was formed in 1879 at a cost of £800; it is under the control of the Urban District Council. The Marine hotel consists of the house and grounds formerly the property and residence of the late Lord Kingsale, and is charmingly situated on the banks of the estuary, commanding a full view of the Bolt Head and the English Channel. The early closing day is on Thursday. In 1869, R. Durant esq. of Sharpham, Totnes, presented Salcombe with a life-boat, called “The Rescue,” and gear, at a cost of £700, and a boat-house was built by public subscription on the south sands: this boat was replaced in 1888 by the “Lesty,” provided from a bequest by the late Mrs. Lesty: another life-boat is stationed at Hope Cove on this coast, in Malborough parish. At North Sands, about a mile from Salcombe, is the Anglo-American telegraph house; the former house was at Starehole Bottom, about a mile and a quarter to the westward. Central Hall, in Market street, erected in 1893 at a cost of £800, contains a large assembly room, seating 250 persons, and reading and recreation rooms. The 2nd Devonshire Artillery Volunteers, Western Division, Royal Artillery, No. 2 Company, have their head quarters in Fore street, and number about 60 rank and file. At Hope Cove, about 4 miles west, the “St. Peter the Great,” one of the ships of the Spanish Armada, was wrecked. Salcombe Castle, erected by Henry VIII. as a defence to the ports on this part of the coast, occupies a strong position on a peninsular rock at the entrance of the harbour; in 1643 it was strengthened and garrisoned for the king by Sir Edmund Fortescue of Fallapit, who named it “Fort Charles”; in 1646 it was besieged by the Parliamentary forces, under Col. Weldon, for four months, and surrendered on honourable terms on 7th May. Woodville, formerly the residence of Mr. J. A. Froude, the historian, is now the property and residence of Major John Bennett. The Moult, formerly the property of the Earl of Devon, is now the seat of Miss Foster. The Grange is the residence of Commander Chas. W. Herbert R.N., J.P. and Cliff House of Robert Heriot esq. The South Devon Land Company Limited has been formed to develop a large building estate adjoining the town. W. R. Ilbert esq. of Bowringsleigh, the trustees of the late Mr. James Ford, C. Newt-on-Robinson esq. who is lord of the manor of Salcombe, George Adams esq. of Paignton and the South Devon Land Co. Limited are chief landowners. The area is 814 acres; rateable value, £6,429; the population in 1901 was 1,700.
