Historical Description

SALCOMBE REGIS is a village and parish extending to the sea coast, bounded on the west by the river Sid and sheltered by boldly swelling hills, which terminate in lofty green sandstone cliffs, 2 miles east from Sidmouth terminal station of a branch of the London and South Western railway, 16 south-east from Exeter and 8 ½ south from Honiton, in the Eastern division of the county, East Budleigh hundred, Ottery petty sessional division, Honiton union and county court district, rural deanery of Ottery, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Peter and St. Mary is a building of stone in the Late Norman and Early English styles, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and an embattled western tower, of Perpendicular date, containing a clock and 3 bells: there are four stained windows and several monumental tablets and in the north aisle is a flat stone inscribed to George Drake, ob. 21 Aug. 1645; Katherine Drake, his sister, ob. 31 Aug. 1651, and Philip Drake, their father, ob. 17 Sept. 1668: the church will seat 221 persons. The register dates regularly from the year 1702, but the earlier registers are lost. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £236, with residence and 9 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter, who are impropriators of the great tithes, and held since 1881 by the Rev. William Joseph Baugh M.A. of Hertford College, Oxford. There are some small charities, left by the late C. W. Smith, which are recorded on a tablet in the church. Salcombe Hill, which divides the parish, rises 497 feet above the level of the sea. The Sid side of the parish is dotted with handsome villas, overlooking the bay and town of Sidmouth. The Right Rev. Robert Kestell Kestell-Cornish D.D. late bishop of Madagascar, and now rector of Down St. Mary, who is lord of the manor, Sir Charles Daniel Cave bart. of Sidbury Manor, the Rev. C. J. Cornish, rector of Childrey, Wantage, Berks, Capt. J. E. H. Balfour, of the Manor House, Sidmouth and Capt. K. R. Balfour M.P. of Branksea Island, Dorset, are the chief landowners. The soil is silicious; the subsoil is limestone. The land is mainly in pasture, but some wheat, barley and roots are grown. The area is 2,568 acres of land, 8 of water and 22 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,607; the population in 1901 was 467.
