Historical Description

SAMPFORD COURTENAY is a parish and village, near the road from Crediton to Okehampton, with a station 2 miles south-east of the village, on the main line of the London and South Western railway, and is 5 miles north-north-east from Okehampton and 194 from London, in the Western division of the county, Black Torrington hundred, Hatherleigh petty sessional division, Okehampton union and county court district, rural deanery of Okehampton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The village is supplied with water for drinking purposes from Ladywell spring, the water being conveyed through pipes laid down in 1887 at a cost of £50. Under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894,” the adjoining parish of Honeychurch was added to this parish for all purposes except ecclesiastical. The church of St. Andrew is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles with arcades of five arches, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells, all cast in 1770: the fine carved oak roof, at present almost entirely hidden by plastering, displays two carved bosses, with busts representing an earl and countess of the Courtenay family of the 14th century: two others bear the figure of a boar and the arms of Courtenay: the rood screen was taken down in 1831, and no remains now exist: the church was restored in 1899 at a cost of £2,500, and affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, with the chapelry of Sticklepath annexed, net yearly value £389, with residence and about 85 acres of glebe, in the gift of King’s College, Cambridge, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Thomas Wright Little M.A. of King’s College, Cambridge. There is a chapel for Bible Christians. The charities amount to £2 8s. yearly.

Near the Board School is an ancient cross in a good state of preservation; and there are others in different parts of the parish. The Provost Fellows of King’s College, Cambridge, who are lords of the manor, William Lethbridge esq. of Wood, South Tawton, Messrs. John Jackman, William Knapman, William Lang and William Reddaway, William Westaway esq. G. T. Mooney, of Down St. Mary, and J. Pedlar esq. of Pinhoe, are the chief landowners.-The soil is red loam and clay; the subsoil is skillett. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area, including Honeychurch, is 8,177 acres; rateable value, £6,307, including Honeychurch; the population in 1901 was 802.
