Historical Description

SAMPFORD PEVERELL is a village and parish, on the high road from Taunton to Tiverton, 3 miles north from the Tiverton Junction station on the Great Western main line, 5 east from Tiverton, 9 south-west from Wellington and 18 north-east from Exeter, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred of Halberton, petty sessional division of Cullompton, union and county court district of Tiverton, rural deanery of East Tiverton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. John the Baptist is an interesting edifice of stone in the Early English and Late Decorated styles, consecrated 12th April, 1318, and consists of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 6 bells, the first four cast in 1761 and the 5th in 1863: the south aisle and porch were added in 1498, by Margaret Beaufort, Countess of Richmond and Derby and mother of King Henry VII.; the nave and chancel are very fine specimens of the Early English style: the font is an excellent example of Norman work: on the north side of the chancel is a mutilated recumbent effigy of a knight in plate armour, wearing a helmet with camail and a cyclas, or long-skirted tunic; on the left arm is a shield, and the right is in the act of drawing his sword; part only of the crossed legs remain; this figure, found below the north aisle, is supposed to represent Sir Hugh Peverell, circa 1259; against the east wall is a mural monument inclosing a brass to Margaret (Harvey), wife of the celebrated Sir Amias Powlett kt. ambassador to France in 1576, and principal keeper of Mary, Queen of Scots; she died 28th May, 1602; the brass includes four male and four female effigies, and has an inscription in Latin, which records its erection by Sir Francis Vincent kt. and George Powlett esq.: there is also an elegant monument in the chancel to Mrs. Rendall, sister of the present rector, who is interred here: eleven of the windows are stained and there is some good screen work: but the rood screen, a rich and curious work, was removed about 1826: the church was beautifully restored in 1863—64, and has 300 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1672; marriages and burials, 1674. The living is a rectory, average tithe net yearly value £280, including a payment of £6 yearly by the Grand Western canal, which runs through this parish, and is now the property of the Great Western Railway Company, and about 9 acres of glebe, in the gift of, and held since 1857, by the Rev. George William Rossiter Ireland. The rectory house was erected in 1841, and has fine gardens. The greater part of the old rectory house, built by Margaret, Countess of Richmond and Derby, mother of King Henry VII. still remains. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1827. The extensive pebble limekilns of Messrs Robert and Thomas Pearce are in this parish. A large fair for cattle is held on the Monday before the last Wednesday in April. The charities, amounting to over £58 yearly, are in the hands of trustees appointed by the Charity Commissioners. This place was anciently the seat of the Peverells, who had a castle here, now demolished; it was thereafter in the posession of Dinhams and the Crown, and was sold by King Henry VIII. to Sir John Poulet, in whose family it remained until sold by Earl Poulett, ob. 1819. The chief landowners now are Mrs. Pedler, Matthew L. Crosby, John Bowden, Peter Were, Thomas Pearce and John Studley, of Broadwindsor, Dorset. The soil is sandy and very fertile; the subsoil is rock and gravel; the higher or upper portion of the parish is clay; and the climate exceedingly healthful. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and grass. The area is 2,210 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £4,372; the population in 1901 was 619 in the civil and 619 in the ecclesiastical parish in 1891.

By Local Government Board Order 16,383, a detached part of Burlescombe, including Boehill Farm House, was added to this parish March 24, 1884, for civil purposes.

National School (mixed), built in 1870, for 150 children; average attendance, 123.
