Historical Description

SANDFORD is a parish and village, delightfully seated in the vale of the little river Creedy, on the road from Crediton to South Molton, 2 ½ miles north-west from Crediton station on the main line of the London and South Western railway, and 9 ½ north-west from Exeter, in the Northern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Crediton, rural deanery of Cadbury and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Swithin is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells, all cast by William Evans, in 1748: the bells were refitted and rehung in a solid oak frame, and the tower strengthened with beams of oak in 1900, at a cost of £130: there is a monument of the 17th century to a member of the Davie family, and a very curious brass to Mary Carew, only sister of George, first and only Earl of Totnes, and widow of Walter Dowrich; she died September 10, 1604: the upper portion of this brass is in three divisions, representing an arcade; in the centre on an altar-tomb is a recumbent effigy of the deceased, and on the other divisions are kneeling effigies of four daughters, and there are five impaled shields and an inscription: the east window is a memorial to Sir Humphrey Phineas Davie bart. d. January 12th, 1846, when the title became extinct in this line: the carved oak pulpit, erected in 1878 as a memorial, is by Hems, of Exeter: in 1886 and 1890 memorial windows to Gen. Sir Henry Robert Ferguson-Davie bart. M.P. d. 30 Nov. 1885; Frances Juliana, his wife, d. April, 1882, and to Lady Edwina Augusta (Williams), wife of the present Sir John Ferguson-Davie bart. of Creedy Park; she died 15 Aug. 1889: the church was restored and enlarged in 1847—8, and affords sittings for 603 persons. The register dates from the year 1603. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £197, with residence, in the gift of three governors of Crediton church corporation, with the approval of a majority of the parishioners, and has been held since 1883 by the Rev. George Taylor Llewellin M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The rectorial tithes were commuted at £1,134 yearly and are held in trust for the church and for charitable purposes by the twelve governors of the church of Crediton. There is a Congregational chapel. Charities amounting to the value of £115 are distributed yearly. A fair is held yearly on the Monday after July 26th, for cattle. Creedy Park is the seat of Lieut.-Col. Sir John Davie Ferguson-Davie bart. D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor and chief landowner; the house is situated in a park of 370 acres. Town Barton, Gays and Higher and Lower Bagborough belong to Edward Comins Norrish esq. Sutton, Ranscombe and Brimley are in the hands of the trustees of the late John Tremlett esq. whose successor is a minor. Ferguson-Davie bart. and is farmed by Mr. Herbert Lake. West Sandford Barton is the property and residence of George Wreford esq. Bremridge belonged to the ancient family of that name from a very early date (ancestors of the late Richard Bremridge esq. M.P. for Barnstaple): by his marriage with Anna Maria Bremridge in 1775 it passed to the great-grandfather of John Bremridge Melhuish esq. of Poughill Barton, and is now the property of Lieut.-Col. Sir J. D. Ferguson-Davie bart. Dowrich belongs to A. Clayfield-Ireland esq. J.P. Ruxford Barton, now occupied by Mr. John Wedlake, was purchased by the Davie family of Henry Coke, of Stow Easton, Somerset. Doddridge was conveyed in 1808 to the Rev. T. Hewlett.
