Historical Description

Seaton is a small town, "lying full upon the sea, "irregularly built, and consisting chiefly of one street. Its situation is low and marshy; the hedges are well wooded, and the roads, though narrow, are good, and afford very pleasant walks and rides. Its comparatively retired situation renders it acceptable to many invalids: the main public walk is, like that at Sidmouth, the beach.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SEATON is a bathing place on the south coast, and parish, with a station on the Seaton blanch of the London and South Western railway, and is 22 miles east from Exeter, 7 south-west from Axminster, 10 south from Honiton and 152 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, Colyton hundred, Axminster petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dunkeswell and Honiton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The river Axe, here flowing into the sea, is an excellent trout stream, and a concrete bridge of three arches connects this place with Axmouth. Seaton is much frequented by visitors during the summer months on account of the salubrity and bracing quality of its climate.

The parish is governed by an Urban District Council, formed in 1895, under the provisions of the Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), which supersedes the Local Board constituted in 1878. The sewage of the town is now carried into the sea. The village is lighted with gas by a Company Limited, and supplied with water from a spring on Couchill. The church of St. Gregory is a building of stone, chiefly in the Late Decorated style, with remains of earlier date, and consists of chancel with chantries, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 4 bells: the chancel retains a piscina and two hagioscopes, and has a reredos: the east window is stained, and there is a memorial window erected to their parents by the Misses Wylde: in the south chantry is a memorial to Dorothy, widow of William Starr, of Beer, gent. bur. Sept. 5th, 1688, and John her son, bur. December 4th, 1629: there is also a flat stone with quaint inscription to John Starre, ob. 1633, a “Starre on Hie”: the church has been restored, and previous to the restoration contained some fine oak screen work with open tracery, displaying the shields of Walrond, Stowford, Holbeame and Hake; only traces of the rood loft stairs now exist: in the Walrond chantry is a tomb with kneeling effigy to Edmond Walrond esq. of Bowe, bur. September 10th, 1640, erected by Anne (PoIe), his wife: there are 415 sittings. The register dates from the year 1531. The living is a vicarage, with Beer annexed, joint net yearly value £217, with residence and 1 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of the Hon. Mark G. K. Rolle, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Piercy John Richardson M.A. of St. John's College, Oxford. The Mission church of the Good Shepherd, in Sidmouth street, was erected in 1889, at a cost of about £1,200, and has since been enlarged by the addition of a chancel, transept and vestry. A spacious Parish room was erected in 1892, at a cost of £400, raised by subscriptions. Here is a Congregational chapel, erected in 1900, at a cost of £2,400, from designs of Mr. George Gush, architect, of this town; it is built of local black flints, with Bath and Beer stone dressings, and has 240 sittings. There are school buildings at the north end of the chapel. The clock tower here, erected in 1887 in commemoration of the Jubilee of H.M. the late Queen Victoria, at a, cost of over £200, on a site given by the late Sir A. W. Trevelyan bart. (d. 1891), is about 50 feet in height. Minerals, garnet, beryl, quartz, flint, chalcedony, common jasper, cornelian, agate, chalk, suilphate of lime, gypsum, and foliated fibrous copper and iron pyrites are found in this parish. Honiton lace is made here. The early closing day is on Wednesday. The.ro are charities of £1 7s. yearly value, and the late Lady Rolle left £3,900 Consols to found almshouses at Beer for 25 poor men and 20 women, and also £3,100 of the same stock to clothe and educate 20 boys and 20 girls. Sir Walter John Trevelyan bart. of Nettlecombe Court, Taunton, Somerset, who is lord of the manor, and the Hon. Mark George Kerr Rolle, with others, are the landowners. The soil is sandy and chalky; the subsoil is gravelly and loamy. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots, but land in the neighbourhood is chiefly in pasture. The area of the civil parish and Urban District is 1,092 acres; rateable value, £8,201; the population in 1891 was 1,293, and in 1901 was 1,325.
