Historical Description

SHEBBEAR is a village and parish near the river Torridge, over which is a bridge of one arch to Milton Damerel, and is 5 miles north from Dunsland Cross station on the Halwill and Bude branch of the London and South Western railway, and 9 north-east from Holsworthy, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Shebbear, Torrington petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Torrington, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Michael is of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and a western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells; the first and sixth were cast in 1863, the others in 1792: the porch has a fine Norman arch and a Sun. dial: the east window is a memorial to the Rev. Peter Davey Foulkes, vicar hero from 1829, erected by public subscription in 1887: under an obtuse arch in the south aisle is a tomb with recumbent sandstone effigy of a female in a flowing robe, mantle and veil, and holding a rosary, her head being supported by angels; the figure (1350—1450) is traditionally said to represent the Lady of Ladford: the church was restored and repewed during 1875—92, at a cost of £1,000, and has 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1576. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £130, with residence and 3 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Thomas Edward Fox.

The Bible Christian chapel, built in 1817 and rebuilt in 1841, will seat 400 persons; attached is a burial ground: there is also a. Wesleyan chapel at New Inn, erected in 1840, and a Baptist chapel at Caute, built in 1884. The Bible Christian Connexional College, near the village, is a spacious building of stone and brick, and includes a large school room, suitable class rooms and large and well-ventilated dormitories; it was enlarged in 1877 at a cost of £4,000, and again in 1883 at a cost of £2,000, and in 1891 at a further of £1,500, and will now hold 120 scholars, the average number being 110; chemical and physical laboratories, a large gymnasium and two new class rooms were added in 1901, and the electric light has been provided for the whole school; the governor’s house adjoins, and there are six resident masters; annexed is a farm of about 100 acres in extent, the gift of the Right Hon. Samuel James Way P.C. Chief Justice of South Australia; the playgrounds are about 5 acres in extent. There are several charities; of these the church lands produce £160 yearly for the relief of the poor inhabitants and for the repairing and maintaining church, church house and almshouses. The Fortescue charity, of the yearly value of £75, is for the free education of poor children. Miss Harrington’s charity, amounting to £5 yearly, is for distribution to the poor; and several smaller sums are distributed on Good Friday. Paul Augustine Kingdon esq. of 29 Marlborough hill, St. John’s Wood, London N.W. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are John Curzon Moore Stevens esq. of Winscott, Peters Morland, and W. H. Battishill esq. The soil is clay; subsoil, stone and clay. The chief crops are cereals. The area is 5,739 acres of land and 19 of water; rateable value, £4,104; the population in 1901 was 840.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Oct. 1, 1874, for the Shebbear & Newton St. Peter united district; Walter W. Daniel, Backway farm, clerk to the board; Thomas Fry, attendance officer.

Board School, opened in June, 1877, for 145 children; average attendance, 100.
