Banns registers list the names of people who intended to marry by the system of calling banns, in which the bride and groom's name were called for three weeks at church. At these callings objections could be made to a marriage. Thus they record any intended marriages that didn't occur.

Historical Description
SHOBROOKE is a parish and village, 3 miles north-east from Crediton station, on the London and South Western railway, in the Northern division of the county, West Budleigh hundred, Crediton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Cadbury and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter.
The church of St. Swithin is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style with some Norman portions, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled tower with turret at the north-east angle containing 6 bells, 5 of which were cast by Thomas Bilbie in 1760, and the sixth by Warner in 1888: the upper portion of the tower was rebuilt in 1888, at a cost of £556: the nave and chancel are separated from the aisles by arcades of four arches: the church was entirely restored and enlarged in 1879, at a cost of £2,600, when a south aisle was added: the restoration of the chancel, including the stained east window, was undertaken by the late Mrs. Knox as a memorial to her husband, a former rector: there are memorial windows to the late Rev. Sir Frederick Shelley bart. rector of Beerferris, d. 19th March, 1869, and to Charlotte Martha, his widow, d. 20 May, 1893, besides others to the late Mrs. Knox, Mrs. Worthington Jukes and Miss Evelyn Cleave: the communion plate includes a flagon, chalice and paten, given by Thomas Lamplugh, bishop of Exeter, 1676—89, and archbishop of York, 1689—91; and another chalice and paten presented by Sir Jonathan Trelawney bart. bishop of Exeter, in 1689: Dean Cary, who died in 1680, was the last resident rector till the year 1866, the living having been held in commendam by the bishops of Exeter: the rood screen was removed in 1577: there are 280 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £394, including 25 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Worthington Jukes M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, and rural dean of Cadbury. There is a chapel of ease at Efford, erected in 1892 at a cost of £500, defrayed by public subscription, and has 90 sittings: Lawrence Bodley, brother of Sir Thomas Bodley kt. founder of the Bodleian library at Oxford, was some time rector here and canon residentiary of Exeter; he died on the 19th April, 1615. The poor have the sum of £24 8s. 9d. yearly from the following charities, as shewn:-Tuckfield charity, £10 4s. 9d.; Trenchard gift, £3; Poor’s Stock money, £5 10s.; Lydia Hunt charity, £3 18s. 4d.; Coleridge charity, £1 15s. 8d. Shobrooke Park is the seat of Sir John Shelley bart. B.A., D.L., J.P.; the mansion stands in an undulating park, studded with fine oak, beech and other trees, and has also a large ornamental piece of water in its centre; it is well stocked with deer, and many rare species of birds are acclimatized here. The Sanctuary is the seat of William Cornish Cleave esq. The manor was long held by the Eredekne family, from whom it descended by marriage to the Carews. The principal landowners are Sir John Shelley bart. who is lord of the manor, and William Cornish Cleave esq. The soil is red loam; subsoil, red rock. The chief crops are wheat and roots. The area is 4,253 acres of land and 14 of water; rateable value, £5,569; the population in 1891 was 632 in the civil and 579 in the ecclesiastical parish.
By Local Government Board Order, 16,552, a detached part of Shobrooke, known as Combe Barton, was transferred to this parish, March 24, 1884.
A School Board of 5 members was formed December 12th, 1882; the Rev. Worthington Jukes M.A. hon. clerk to the board.
Board School, erected in 1883 & enlarged in 1892, for 130 children; average attendance, 102.
