Historical Description

Shute is a small parish, on the western side of the Axe. It contains the small village of Whilford, and New Shute-house, a noble mansion, the residence of Sir William De-la-Pole. It is a fine stone building, delightfully situated on Shute-hill, and about four miles from the sea. The church of Shute is dedicated to St. Peter; it is a small stone edifice, and contains several monuments belonging to the De-la-Poles and Templars.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SHUTE is a parish, consisting of scattered houses, on the west bank of the river Axe and on the Exeter and Axmouth road, 3 miles north from Colyton, 3 west from Axminster and 24 east from Exeter, in the Eastern division of the county, Colyton hundred, Axminster petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dunkeswell and Honiton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. Seaton Junction station on the London and South Western railway is in this parish, about one mile south from the village, and 147 miles from London. The church of St. Michael is a cruciform building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a central embattled tower containing 5 bells: there are several handsome monuments to the De La Pole family, one of which has a fine marble statue of Sir William Pole bart. master of the household to William III. and Queen Anne, ob. 1741: in the Pole chapel is a very handsome memorial, erected in 1892, to the late Margaret Victoriosa (Talbot), wife of Sir W. E. Pole bart. who died 23 Nov. 1886; it was executed by Mr. Harry Hems, of Exeter, and consists of a cenotaph of polished veined alabaster, over 7 feet high; in the centre is a sculptured group, representing the meeting at the gate of Paradise of the departed lady and her three little girls, who died many years before; the four figures are exquisitely modelled, and above, on a shield, are the arms of Pole impaling Talbot: there is also a tablet to the memory of C. B. Templer esq. who perished in the “Halswell,” East Indiaman, 6 Jan. 1786: the chancel was restored in 1863, and in 1869 the interior was thoroughly renovated and re-seated, and a marble reredos erected: the east window is stained, several of the others display the emblazoned shields of the Pole family, and in 1895 a memorial window was placed by Sir E. R. Talbot Pole bart. to the late Sir William Edmund Pole bart. d. 1895: in 1888 a handsome Sun.-dial was erected over the south porch by Mr. Clode, in memory of his wife: there are upwards of 300 sittings, all free, with the exception of those reserved for the Pole family. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1568; marriages, 1561; burials, 1562. The living is a vicarage, separated in 1860 by an Order in Council from Colyton, to which it was formerly attached as a chapelry; net yearly value £308, with acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter, and held since 1894 by the Rev. John Marshal Morrell. A fair was formerly held at Whitford on the Monday before Michaelmas, yearly, for pleasure, but has fallen into disuse. Shute was anciently the seat of the Bonvilles, barons Bonville, but was transferred to the Poles in the 16th century. The remains of the old house, probably erected by William Pole esq. the first possessor, in the reign of Queen Mary, consist of the gate-house, an embattled structure, flanked by octagonal towers, and displaying the arms of Pole: “Az semee of fleurs-de-lis, a lion, ramp, arg.” quartering those of Pole of Cheshire; and other buildings, now used as a farm: the builder, who died 15th Aug. 1587, is buried in Colyton church. Shute House is the seat of Sir Edmund Reginald Talbot Pole bart. lord of the manor and owner of nearly the whole of the parish; the deer park extends over an area of 100 acres, and is well stocked with deer. The soil is chiefly red marl; the subsoil is marl, and some lighter soil adapted for turnips and barley. The area is 2,650 acres of land and 9 of water; rateable value, £7,738; the population in 1891 was 444.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Jan. 4, 1875; Seth Enticott, Shute, clerk to the board.

Board School, Shute (mixed & infants), erected in 1876 at a cost of about £1,600, for 127 children; average attendance, 97.
