Historical Description

SILVERTON is a parish and village, anciently a market town, near the rivers Exe and Culme, with a station on the main line of the Great Western railway from Taunton to Exeter, 2 miles south-east from the village, with Upexe station on the Exe valley branch of the Great Western railway from Exeter to Dulverton about one mile west from the village, and in Rewe parish, and is 8 miles north-east from Exeter, 7 south from Tiverton, 5 ½ south-west from Cullompton. and 171 ½ from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hayridge hundred, Cullompton petty sessional division, Tiverton union and county court district, rural deanery of East Tiverton and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock, added in 1897, a Jubilee memorial to the late Queen Victoria, and 6 bells: there are some remains of old oak screens: the church affords 495 sittings: in the churchyard, which was enlarged in 1900, by the addition of half an acre, the gift of W. Wyndham esq. the lord of the manor, are the steps and part of a shaft of a 14th cent, cross. The register dates from the year 1626. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £512, with 89 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of William Wyndham esq. of Dinton House, Salisbury, and the Hon. W. F. Danvers Smith M.P. and held since 1894 by the Rev. Joseph Heald Ward M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan Reform chapel. The Manor Audit Rooms are the property of William Wyndham esq. and are used for the purposes of the estate, as well as a club and reading room, and for public entertainments. The Silverton paper mills of Messrs. Reed and Smith employ about 200 persons. Two fairs were formerly held here on the second, Thursday in February and on the first, Thursday in July, yearly. The charities, producing £125 yearly, are distributed in money and kind. Silverton Park, about 190 acres in extent, was formerly the property of the trustees of George Francis, 4th and last Earl of Egremont, who died in the old mansion here, 2 April, 1845, when the title became extinct; the mansion was demolished in 1901. William Wyndham esq. of Dinton House, Salisbury, is lord of the manor and chief landowner; Hugh Leonard Ackland-Troyte esq. of Huntsham Court, Bampton; Sir Charles Thomas Dyke-Acland bart. of Killerton, Exeter; Charles Robert Collins esq. of Exeter; Alexander Macartney Read esq. and the Hon. W. F. D. Smith M.P. of Moreton Hampstead, are also landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 4,716 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £10,485; the population in 1901 was 1,188.

Schools (Endowed, boys), endowed by bequest of John Richards in 1724, with £120 per annum, for boys born & resident in the parish; it was rebuilt in 1858 for 100 boys; average attendance, 84.
