Historical Description
SOURTON is a scattered village and parish on the road from Okehampton to Tavistock, 2 miles north from Bridestowe station on the main line of the London and South Western railway and 4 ½ south-west from Okehampton, in the Western division of the county, Lifton hundred and petty sessional division, Okehampton union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Okehampton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Thomas a Becket is a building of granite in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 5 bells, all cast in 1776: the church was restored in 1871 and again in 1881 by the late S. C. Hamlyn esq. of Leawood, Bridestowe: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1722. The living, formerly a chapelry united to the rectory of Bridestowe, was made an independent vicarage in 1889, net yearly value £225, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Oliver Puckridge M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. A new Wesleyan Methodist chapel was erected here in 1892, and there is also a Baptist chapel. The Church room, erected in 1897, as a memorial to the late Vincent Waldo Calmadv Hamlyn esq. will seat over 250 persons. In the neighbourhood there are lime quarries. The land is all freehold. The principal landowners are Mrs. Charles Holley, of Leawood, Bridestowe; John Butters Newton-Ashford esq.; the trustees of the late Ven. Henry Woollcombe M.A. archdeacon of Barnstaple; Simon Peter Brendon Newcombe esq. of Okehampton and John Durant Palmer esq. The soil is clay and marl; subsoil, shale. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats; a large portion of the land is pasture. The acreage is 5,046; rateable value, £3,249; the population in 1901 was 403.
