Historical Description
SOUTH POOL is a parish, the village of which stands in a deep vale, 5 ½ miles south-west from Kingsbridge station on a branch of the Great Western railway, in the Southern division of the county, Coleridge hundred, petty sessional division of Stanborough and Coleridge, union and county court district of Kingsbridge, rural deanery of Woodleigh, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The parish, which includes North Pool, 1 mile north, and part of the hamlet of Frogmore, 2 miles north, is on the eastern side of the Kingsbridge estuary. The church of St. Nicholas and St. Cyriac is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, dating from 1318, and consists of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and a western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells: there are remains of a fine 15th century screen, half of which has been carefully restored by Hems, of Exeter: in the chancel, within a canopied arched recess, is an altar-tomb, formerly serving as an Easter sepulchre, and still adorned with a carving of the “Resurrection”: on the tomb is placed the recumbent effigy of a priest in a surplice, with large open sleeves, hanging in plaited folds, and over this-a stole: in the spandrils of the canopy are the initials “T. B.” and on the cornice is an inscription in Latin to Thomas Briant, rector of South Pool and Portlemouth: under a window in the south transept is the recumbent effigy of a lady in a long close-fitting dress and mantle, conjectured to represent Muriel (de Mules), wife of Sir Thomas de Courtenay, lord of South Pool, in 1340: there are monuments dating from 1588: the original stone steps leading to the rood loft remain, and the church retains piscinae and stoups, and has a fine Norman font: the stained east window is a memorial to Thomas and Sally Cornish and their two children: the church was restored in 1877 at a cost of £697, under the direction of Mr. R. Medley Fulford, architect, and affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1664. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £310, including 48 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Maitland Kelly, of Kelly House, Lifton, who has two turns, and Admiral George Parker, of Delamore, who has one turn in three, and held since 1890 by the Rev. William Reinfred Harris Arundell M.A. of Keble College, Oxford. The charities consist of an annuity of 20s. left by Leonard Dare, a gift of 40s. a year, left by Andrew Horsman, £78 5s. yearly left by the late Mrs. Praed, for the school and other purposes, and £9 yearly for distribution amongst the poor at Christmas, left in 1898 by the late Lewis Garland. Captain Albert Praed Hallifax, of Halwell House, who is lord of the manor, the trustees of the late Sir C. Edgar Peek bart. and Mr. Nathaniel Browse Prettejohn, of Molescombe, are the principal landowners. The soil is fertile; subsoil, chiefly schist. The chief crops are wheat, barley, potatoes and pasturage. The area is 1,983 acres of land, 9 of tidal water and 249 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,060; the population in 1901 was 296.
National School (mixed), built, with residence for master, in 1866, for 120 children; average attendance, 60.
