The church of St. Andrew is a building of granite in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells, the second dated 1837 and the others 1744: on the south side of the tower is an ancient Sun.-dial: in the north aisle, or Wyke chapel, as it is called, is an Elizabethan tomb, dated 1592, with a full-length male effigy in the armour and ruff of the period, said to represent John Wyke esq. of North Wyke, in the parish of South Tawton: the fine oak pulpit is panelled and inlaid with scriptural figures: at the east end are three stained windows, presented by H. A. Hoare esq. in 1856: in the north aisle are three memorial windows to the Rev. John Bliss M.A. late vicar, and to the Weeke and Oxenham families: the stained west window was erected by Mrs. Harriet Cann as a memorial to Richard Dunning, who died in 1871, aged 102: in the south aisle is a stained window, presented by William Lethbridge esq.: in the chancel is a rich Perpendicular reredos, erected to the Rev. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1540; marriages and burials, 1558; and there are churchwardens’ bowks dating from the same year.
