Historical Description

STOCKLAND is a large and scattered village and parish, in a vale between the valleys of the Otter and Yarty and on the road from Honiton to Chard, 6 miles north-east from Honiton and 6 north-west from Axminster, both stations on the main line of the London and South Western railway, 6 south-west from Chard station on a branch of the Great Western railway, and 14 south from Taunton, in the Eastern division of the county, Axminster hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dunkeswell and Honiton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. This parish formerly belonged to Dorsetshire, but by the Boundaries Act, 1831—2 (2 and 3 William IV. cap. 64), and the County Act, 1844 (7 and 8 Vict. cap. 61), it was annexed to Devonshire. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 6 bells, dated 1663: the stained east window was given by the Rev. W. Turner, a former curate: the church was restored in 1888, at a cost of £800, and affords sittings for 500 persons. The register dates from the year 1640. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Dalwood annexed, joint net yearly value £218, with glebe and house, value £33, in the gift of the principal landowners, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Alfred Vyvyan Cox M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford. The patronage is vested in certain of the freeholders under the following circumstances:-The rectory and vicarage were anciently parts of the possessions of the dissolved monastery of Milton, otherwise Middleton, Dorset, which became vested in the Crown on the dissolution of monasteries in the reign of Henry VIII. and on the 1st April, 3rd Edward VI. A.D. 1549, the said rectory and vicarage were by that monarch granted to William Perye, of Membury, Devon, and John Kyte, of Stockland aforesaid, as joint tenants in fee simple, in consideration of £590 2s. 7 ¼d.; from that period until the year 1688 no certain account of the ownership under that grant can be given, but from the best accounts it would seem that John Kyte survived William Perye, and that by right of survivorship incident to a joint tenancy he became sole owner, and that the ownership subsequently passed from John Kyte to his grandson, Thomas Kyte, who sold to 56 owners of lands in the parish the great or rectorial tithes of their respective lands therein (but being himself an owner of lands in the parish he reserved the great or rectorial tithes of them), together with shares of the advowson and right of presentation to the vicarage; and accordingly, by a deed dated the 16th June, 1688, he together with Rachel, his wife, as doweress, conveyed in fee simple the tithes so sold, together with the entire advowson, to Richard Palmer, Elias Booby alias Hearne, William Downing and Robert Liddon as trustees for the purchasers, and those trustees immediately afterwards, and in the same month, conveyed to each of the purchasers in fee simple his or her purchase share, but in various instances it has become difficult, if not impossible, to deduce titles from those purchasers to their shares of the advowson: the main cause of this probably is the few occasions that have since occurred for exercising the right of patronage, there having been but 5 vacancies in the vicarage between 1688 and 1846, at periods averaging about 50 years apart. The mode of electing the vicar is prescribed by the deed of 16th June, 1688. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. There are charities of about £85, arising from certain lands in the parish. Here are two grist mills. A stock fair is held yearly on the first Wednesday after the 11th of June. On the estate at Broad hayes are the well preserved remains of a Danish camp. Richard Marker esq. of Combe, Honiton, who is lord of the manor, Mrs. Knight, of Broadhayes, Mr. Willian George Michell, the trustees of T. P. Eames esq. and William Paterson esq. are the chief landowners. The sol is chiefly clay; the subsoil is marl. The chief crops art hay and corn, with some fine dairy and pasture land. The area is 5,914 acres; rateable value, £6,378; the population, in 1901 was 821.

National School (mixed), for 190 children; average attendance, 80.
