Historical Description
STOKE DAMEREL, originally the mother parish of Devonport, but now absorbed into the new parish of Devonport, and one of its suburbs, forming the Stoke ward of that borough, lies on a gentle acclivity facing the south and east, about a mile from the town, and has now become a populous and fashionable neighbourhood. The houses, mostly detached, are of a superior class; and the appearance of Stoke from the Sound or Mount Edgcumbe is singularly attractive. There are stations here under the name of “Devonport” on the Great Western and South Western railways; the extension of the latter from Lid-ford, completed in 1890, has also a station at Ford in the parish. Stoke Damerel is connected with Stonehouse by the Mill bridge, which crosses the creek at its upper extremity.
St. Andrew’s, the old church of Stoke Damerel, about half a mile from the Dockyard, is a building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of nave, aisles, north and south porches and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells, all cast by Thomas Bilbie, of Cullompton, in 1789, from a previous peal of four, with additional metal: the church consisted originally of a nave, but in 1750 and previously aisles were added, so that the breadth of the building is now greater than its proper length: it contains many mural monuments, recording the services of various eminent personages: the church was restored in 1883 at a cost of £1,003, and affords 800 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1689; marriages and burials, 1707. The living is a rectory, net yearly income £929, with 10 acres of glebe, in the gift of Lord St. Levan, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Stewart Gordon Ponsonby M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, examining chaplain to the Bishop of Exeter, and surrogate.
St. Barnabas, in Stuart road, a mission chapel in connection with the parish church, is a building in the Early English style from designs by Mr. J. P. St. Aubyn, architect, begun in 1886 and completed in 1893 at a cost of £7,500: there are sittings for 600 persons.
St. Bartholomew's, in Church street, Higher Stoke, also attached to the parish church, was built in 1880—84, at a cost of £509, and will seat 200 persons.
St. Michael’s is an ecclesiastical parish, formed June 27, 1873: the church, in Albert road, at the junction of Morice Town and Stoke, was erected in 1845 at a cost of £4,000, and is a building of stone, in the Gothic style, consisting of nave, aisles, north porch and a turret containing one bell: there are 1,100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1873. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £378, derived from pew rents and an endowment from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, in the gift of the rector of Stoke Damerel, and held since 1884 by the Rev. William Mantle B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, and rural dean of the Three Towns, and surrogate.
There is a Primitive Methodist chapel in Hotham place, with 100 sittings, and a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, with 500 sittings.

The Royal Albert bridge, which carries the Great Western railway across the Tamar to Saltash and connects the counties of Devon and Cornwall, is one of the greatest achievements of Isambard K. Brunei, the distinguished engineer; it was formally opened by H.R.H. Prince Consort, 2 May, 1859, and consists of 19 spans or arches, the main portion over the river being two spans only, resting on one grand cast iron pier in the middle of the river, and leaving the traffic on each side almost unimpeded: the total length is 2,240 feet, and its greatest height from the foundation to the summit is about 260 feet; the principal weight of the whole of this mass of iron of more than 4,000 tons rests upon the great main pier.
Most of the residences in this neighbourhood afford extensive, varied and beautiful land and sea views.
Parish Clerk of Stoke, W. J. P. Symons, 17 Stoke terrace, Stoke.
St. Mark’s is an ecclesiastical parish formed December 15, 1885, from Stoke Damerel civil parish; the church, in Cambridge road, Ford, is a building of dressed limestone in the Early Pointed style, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles: the chancel was built in 1874 and the nave and aisles in 1882, the total cost being £5,000: there are 850 sittings. An iron building for Sunday school purposes was erected at a cost of £400. The register dates from the year 1884. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £185, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1897 by the Rev.
