Historical Description

STOKE GABRIEL is a village and parish, on the eastern bank of the estuary of the Dart, 4 miles south-east from Totnes station on the South Devon section of the Great Western railway, and 7 south-west from Torquay, in the Torquay division of the county, hundred of Haytor, Paignton petty sessional division and county court district, Totnes union, and in the rural deanery and archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Gabriel is an ancient building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells; the first two were cast in 1845, the third and fifth in 1674; the fourth dates from 1648 and the tenor from 1827; in 1889 the entire peal was tuned and rehung: the chancel retains a priscina: the east window and two others are stained: in the south aisle is a brass to members of the Hunt family, and there are some remains of oak screens: the church was repaired and re-seated in 1855, and again restored in 1879, at a cost of £1,800, the greater part of which was given by Mrs. Olive Holdsworth Hunt: the chancel was re-seated and refitted in 1899: there are 300 sittings: in the churchyard is a very fine yew tree. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £209, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1881 by the Rev. John Henry Napper Nevill M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The sum of £10 yearly, accruing from the rent of the inn called “Church House,” is devoted to the repairs of the church. The charities amount to about £10 10s. yearly, derived chiefly from the rents of some fields at Broadhempstone, and are distributed by the vicar and churchwardens in money. Here is a Baptist chapel. Stoke Gabriel was the birthplace of John Davis, the celebrated navigator of the North Seas, whose name has been given to the straits discovered by him in August, 1585, between Greenland and North America; he was killed by pirates on the coast of Malacca, December 27, 1605. Mazonet, the residence of Alexander Francis Garden Brown esq. is delightfully situated in the centre of park-like grounds, a short distance from the river Dart, and commands extensive views of the surrounding neighbourhood. About a mile and a half south-east from the village is Sandridge Park, formerly the residence of Charles Frederick, 11th and last Baron Cranstoun, d. 28th September, 1869, and now occupied by the Hon. Baroness de Virte: the mansion is surrounded by extremely rich and fine scenery. Waddeton Court, the residence of Col. Robert Wright Studdy, stands on an eminence about 2 miles south-east, and overlooks the broad reach of the Dart to Lower Dittisham; it is a mansion in the Elizabethan style, built on ground near the site of an older house, some remains of which are still standing; the interior retains some good specimens of ancient carving, and in the grounds is a private domestic chapel, in the Early English style, erected in 1870, and consisting of chancel and nave and a belfry containing one bell: in the chapel are several brasses to members of the family of Studdy. Capt. John George Edmund Templar, of Lyndridge, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are H. Studdy esq. the trustees of the late J. C. Jackson, A. F. G. Brown esq. the Collings family, the Rev. Prebendary Marcus Dimond-Churchward M.A. vicar of Northam, the baroness de Virte and Fredk. Churcrward esq. of Granville Park, Blackheath, London. The soil is light loam; subsoil, limestone and dunstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 2,350 acres of land, 1 of water, 119 of tidal water and 183 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,370; the population in 1891 was 618.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Aug. 27, 1873; Richard Newland Matthews, clerk to the board; Richd. Evans, attendance officer.

Board School, built in 1876, at a cost of £1,100, for 150 children; average attendance, 115.
