Historical Description

STOKENHAM is a large village and parish, extending over a rich tract of land, 5 ½ miles east from Kingsbridge station on a branch of the Great Western, railway, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Coleridge, petty sessional division of Stanborough and Coleridge, union and county court district of Kingsbridge, rural deanery of Woodleigh, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Michael and All Angels, formerly dedicated to St. Barnabas, is a large building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consecrated in 1431 and consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells: the chancel retains its piscina, and the fine screen has been restored and re-decorated: the font is of early date: the pulpit is of stone, but has been painted to match the screen, and was a gift by the Freemasons of England during the incumbency of the Rev. John Charles Carwithen: the east window is a memorial to Mrs. Holdsworth, d. 1875: a stained window in the south transept commemorates 28 persons who perished in the wreck of the “Spirit of the Ocean” on this coast 23rd March, 1966, and there is another erected by the Holdsworth family to their mother, who died in 1888, and one to the Allen family: the church was restored in 1874 at a cost of £1,200, and the chancel in 1890, by A. F. Holdsworth esq. at a cost of £300: there are 600 sittings. John Somaster, the last of the family of that name at Painsford, in Ashprington, was buried here in 1681. The register dates from the year 1578. The living is a vicarage, with that of Sherford and the chapelry of Chivelstone annexed, joint net yearly value £100, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Conrad William Curling Finzel M.A. of Oxford University. The Congregational chapel at Torcross was erected in 1884 at a cost of £600, and has sittings for 150 persons. Attached are schoolrooms. There is a reading room, erected and furnished by A. F. Holdsworth esq. for the use of parishioners. Coleridge, a mansion in the Elizabethan style, surrounded by shrubberies and grounds, is now a farmhouse. Widdicombe is a marine mansion, the seat of Arthur Frederick Holdsworth esq. J.P.; Stokeley, the property of Sir R. H. S. L. D. Newman bart. of Mamhead Park, Exeter, and now (1901) unoccupied, is a fine mansion, with grounds well laid out. A. F. Holdsworth esq. is lord of part of the manor, called the Priory, and Sir R. H. S. L. D. Newman bart. also holds part of the manorial rights. The soil is loamy; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, fruit, mangolds, with some rich pasture. The area is 5,774 acres of land, 168 of water and 122 of foreshore; rateable value, £7,578; the population of the parish in 1901 was 1,380.

SCHOOLS

A School Board of 5 members was formed Aug. 22, 1874; J. Harris Square, Kingsbridge, clerk to the board.

Board (mixed), built of stone in 1857, with residence for master & mistress; it will hold 150 children; average attendance, 120.

Board School, Huccombe (mixed), erected in 1877, at a cost of £700, for 108 children; average attendance, 77.

The Dartmouth Coaching Company’s coaches, running between Kingsbridge & Dartmouth, pass through Torcross three times daily: the drive of 15 miles is one of the finest in England, through the parishes of Charleton & Stukenham, & along the Slapton Sands, the sea being on one side & the far-famed Slapton Ley on the other; passing the Royal Sands hotel, the drive is continued through the villages of Strete, Blackpool & Stokefleming into Dartmouth; the coaches wait for the arrival of the 9.55 a.m.. & 1.50 & 6.50 p.m. trains.
