Torcross History

TORCROSS, 1 mile south-east of Stokenham church, is a fishing hamlet and small watering place on the south coast, in Start Bay, and commands an uninterrupted view of the Channel: it has been much improved by the erection of a raised beach, forming a drive and promenade extending upwards of two miles, close to the sea shore, from Torcross to Slapton sands. The Start Point Lighthouse, easily reached by a walk along the coast, is about 4 miles from the Torcross hotel; a new lea has been made, covering nearly 40 acres, and is rented by Mr. William Vickery, the proprietor of the hotel, from A. F. Holdsworth esq. Arrangements have been made with the Government telegraph department by means of which casualties at sea can be reported by telegraph from Start Point lighthouse. Several residences were built here by the late Sir Lydston Newman bart. and others by A. F. Holdsworth esq. There is a lea of fresh water, abounding with pike, roach and perch, and, in the colder season, with wild fowl, some of which are very rare. By means of a weir the excess of water produced by heavy rains is carried through a cutting in the rock to the sea.
