Historical Description
SUTCOMBE is a parish and village 6 miles north from Holsworthy station, on a branch of the London and South Western railway, in the Western division of the county, Black Torrington hundred, Holsworthy petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Holsworthy, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter: the river Waldon flows through the parish and is crossed by a stone bridge of one arch. The church of St. Andrew is a very ancient building of stone, in the Norman and later styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north and south chapels, north aisle and a small western tower, restored in 1899 at a cost of £280, and containing 3 bells, dated respectively 1611, 1720 and 1732: there is a plain Norman doorway and some remains of a beautifully carved oak rood screen, restored under the direction of Mr. R. Medley Fulford, architect, and a Jacobean pulpit: in the north chapel are flat stones bearing the arms of Prideaux and inscriptions to Humfrey Prideaux of Soldon esq. ob. 15 March, 1692 Ann, his daughter and heir, ob. 8 March, 170 2/3; and John Prideaux of Soldon esq. her husband, ob. 16 June, 1706; Peter Prideaux, ob. Dec. 3, 1711, and Katherine (Kelland) his wife, ob. 10 April, 1706; in the south or Theuborough chapel are similar inscriptions with arms, to Thomasine (Hengscott), 1st wife of Nicholas Prideaux, gent. ob. 16 Aug. 1573; Humfery Prideaux of Hankford, gent. ob. 9 April, 1664; Jonathan Prideaux of Theuborough esq. and Ann (Clark) his wife; Charles Davie of Bideford esq. ob. 11 July, 1742; and Frances Prideaux his wife, ob. 15 Jan. 1764: this aisle or chantry, possibly dedicated to St. Leonard, was probably founded and endowed by the family of De Esse, the ancient possessors of Theuborough, whose arms appear on the bosses of the nave and over the altar in the chantry, the east window of which contains five shields of arms, illustrating some descents and alliances of the Giffards; the capitals of the granite piers of the north arcade, dating from the 16th century, bear the arms of Prideaux, Hody and Spencer; and the easternmost bosses in the chancel display the arms of the ancient family of le Cornu; the bench ends are richly adorned with shields of arms of the De Esse, Giffard, Prideaux, Speecott, Dennis, Wyke, Spencer, and other families, and with panels and shields bearing various monograms: the east window is stained: there is a piscina in the chancel and one in the south chapel: the principal part of the church is paved with ancient tiles: the restoration of the church, partially effected in 1876 under Messrs. Bodley and Garner, architects, was continued in 1889 under the direction of Mr. R. M. Fulford and Messrs. Tait and Harvey, architects, of Exeter, at a cost of £720: it affords about 150 sittings. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1685; burials, 1684. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £220, including 50 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Jane Ravenhill, and held since 1890 by the Rev. William Henry Ravenhill. Here are Bible Christian and Wesleyan chapels. Sir W. Morice's charity of about £68 yearly is for the support of inmates of the six almshouses in this parish. There is no manor. The principal landowners are the trustees of the late W. Yeo esq. The soil is light loam; subsoil, clay and stone rubble. The chief crops are oats and wheat. The area is 2,872 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £1,441; the population in 1901 was 281.
By Local Government Board Order, 14,690, a detached part of this parish known as Little Sutcombe was transferred to Pancrasweek, March 24, 1884.
A School Board of 5 members was formed November 26, 1874; John Furse, jun. Holsworthy, clerk to the board.
Board School (mixed), built in 1876, for 70 children; average attendance, 55.
