SWYMBRIDGE (or Swimbridge) is a parish and village seated in a hollow surrounded by hills, and on the road from Tiverton and South Molton to Barnstaple, with a station on the Devon and Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, and is 4 ½ miles east-south-east from Barnstaple and 204 miles from London, in the North Western division of the county, South Molton hundred, Braunton petty sessional division, Barnstaple union and county court district, rural deanery of Sherwill, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. James is a fine building of stone in the Late Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel with aisles, north transept, which retains an ancient piscina, nave, north aisle, south porch and a western tower of the Decorated period, with spire, and containing a clock and 6 bells, all cast in 1753, by William Evans, of Chepstow: on the south side of the chancel is St. Bridget’s chantry chapel, built by the Mules family, of Ernesborough: the bosses of the roof are adorned with emblazoned shields of the D’Abernon, Denys, Cary, Mules and Orchard families and it has a stained window: the north aisle was built by Sir John Moeles, or Mules, whose family, a younger branch of the Lords Moels, were for some generations seated at Ernesborough, now called Irishborough, in this parish: there are several monuments and memorial on copper to the Chichester and other families, and a stone pulpit, with figures of saints: the oak rood screen, restored under the direction of Mr. J. L. Pearson R.A., F.S.A, is remarkable for the marvellous delicacy and beauty of its carving: the font is inclosed within a screen of carved oak and there is a reredos of alabaster and marble, erected in 1894 as a memorial to the late John Smyth esq.: the church was restored in 1880, at a cost of £4,000, and has 250 sittings. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1563; burials, 1562. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £295, with residence and 58 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Henry Harrison, of Edinburgh University. Cobbaton House (or West Cobbaton), once the seat of the Burys, afterwards came to the Notts: John Nott acted in a transfer of parish land in 1524: Mary Nott, by her marriage with William Thorne, brought it to the latter family, and it now belongs to the representatives of the late William Thorne esq. of the ancient family of Thome, or de Spineto, of Sampford Spinney and Thorne, which family has existed since the time of King John. Bydown, a large and imposing mansion in the Classic style, with a very fine pillared and domed entrance hall, was formerly owned by the Mayne and Chichester families, but is now the property of John Nott Pyke-Nott esq. B.A.Oxon, whose ancestor purchased and rebuilt it, and is the residence at present of Thomas Frederick Parkinson esq.: the Notts have been substantial yeomen here since 1567. Tordown is the property and residence of Frederick Richard Harding-Nott esq. Dennington, late the property of Col. Bury Russell, now belongs to the Rev. W. H. Thompson.
