Historical Description

TAMERTON FOLIOT, once a market town, is a parish and large village, pleasantly seated on a creek at the confluence of the rivers Tavy and Tamar, with a station, opened in Dee. 1897, about 1 ½ miles west of the village, on the London and South Western railway, 3 south-west from Bickleigh station, on the Tavistock and Launceston branch of the Great Western railway, 5 north from Plymouth and 10 south from Tavistock, in the Western division of the county, Roborough hundred, Midland Roborough petty sessional division, Plympton St. Mary union, county court district of East Stonehouse, rural deanery of Plympton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The name of this place derives its suffix from the Foliots, who resided at Warleigh in this parish. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, the greater part of it having been renewed since 1850, and consists of quasichancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells, all cast by the Penningtons in 1773. and a clock given by his brothers and sisters, in memory of the late Mr. Mark E. Grigg, who died in Egypt in February, 1896; in the north aisle is an altar-tomb, with recumbent effigies of a knight and lady; the former is in plate armour, and wears a bascinet with camail and a hauberk covered by a tunic on which is the device of a “Gorge,” or whirlpool, represented by three circles, one within the other; the lady wears a close-fitting dress, square head-dress and mantle; the heads of both figures are supported by angels; they probably represent one of the Gorges family and his wife, resident here about 1346; next the Tower screen is a flat stone, inscribed to Samuel Madock esq. of Plymouth, d. 2 Dec. 1713, and the Hon. Isabella (Mohun), his wife, with their daughter Catherine, d. 1712: and there are also monuments to the Copleston, Radcliffa and Bampfylde families and memorial windows to General Macan, placed there by his nephew in 1887 and to Mr. and Mrs. J. Williams Grigg, Mr. and Mrs. Lillicrap and Mrs. Symons and Mrs. Cornish their daughters. In 1880 a Faculty was obtained to remove the west gallery; the tower arch was then opened and a screen erected; the floor of the belfry was also relaid, the font placed in a baptistery in the south aisle, and a lightning conductor fixed to the tower, at the cost of the Right Hon. Sir Massey Lopes bart. P.C. of Maristow. In 1895 the church was further restored, under the superintendence of Mr. G. H. Fellowes Prynne, the chancel and north aisle being rebuilt, and the roof renewed, a carved oak communion table and choir stalls provided, and an organ erected at a cost of £340. The church affords 340 sittings. The register dates from the year 1794; all the earlier registers were accidentally destroyed by fire. The living, formerly attached to the priory of Plympton, is a vicarage, net yearly income £220, with residence and 3 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1870 by the Rev. Edward Roberts M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. At Down House is a mission room, in which services are held on Sunday. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, with sittings for 150. persons. Crown Hill Convalescent Home, standing on an elevated position, was opened November, 1894, and is available for 24 patients. The poor have about £60 yearly, derived from the Maristow charity and the gifts of Lady Modyford and others. On the green near the church stands the “Copleston” oak, the traditional site of a murder by a member of that family, and described as “the fatal oak” in Mrs. Bray’s novel “Warleigh.” Maristow, originally Martdnstowe, the residence of the Right Hon. Sir Massey Lopes bart. P.C., M.A., D.L., J.P. is delightfully situated on the Tavy, nearly 3 miles north; here George III. and three of the princesses were on one occasion entertained: a private chapel, rebuilt in 1877 by Sir Massey Lopes bart. occupies the site of the old chapel of St. Martin, the ruins of which still remain: the well of St. Martin also stands in the grounds. Uplands is the residence of Francis Edward Fox esq. J.P. and Cann House, that of Henry William Grigg esq.; several other good residences are also within the parish. The manor, anciently held by the Foliots, descended through their heiress to the Gorges family, and from these, by female heirs, to the families of Bonvile, Copleston and Bampfylde. Gilbert Foliot, bishop of Hereford (1149—63) and of London (1163—89), was a native of this parish. Warleigh, the ancient manor house, on the banks of the Tavy, 1 mile north-west from the village, and formerly belonging to the Foliot family is now the residence of Walter John Deacon Radcliffe esq. J.P. Mrs. Radcliffe, who is lady of the manor, and the Right Hon. Sir Massey Lopes bart. P.C. lord of the manor of Bickleigh, are the chief landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, slate. The crops are wheat, barley, oats and green crops, in addition to market garden produce, fine fruit and flowers. The area is 4,774 acres of land, 1 of water, 33 of tidal water and 251 of foreshore; rateable value, £9,610; the population in 1901 was 1,102.

Endowed Church of England (mixed), founded & endowed by Dame Mary Dean in 1734, rebuilt in 1877 & enlarged in 1889, for 210 children; average attendance, 41 boys, 41 girls & 41 infants.
