Historical Description
TEIGNGRACE (or Teignrace) is a parish and village on the river reign, with a station, 217 miles from London, on the Moreton Hampstead branch, and another called Heathfield Junction, 220 miles from London, on the reign Valley branch of the South Devon section of the Great Western railway. Teigngrace is about 2 miles north-west from Newton Abbot, 16 south-west from Exeter, 8 north-west from Torquay and 6 south from Chudleigh, in the Mid division of the county, Teignbridge hundred and petty sessional division, Newton Abbot union, Newton Abbot and Torquay county court district, rural deanery of Moreton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The Stover canal, made by the Templer family, and extending from the head of the navigable portion of the reign to this village, a distance of about 2 miles, greatly facilitates the exportation of the pipe and potters’ clay found in the neighbourhood; it is now the property of the Great Western Railway Company, whose line is adjacent and parallel to it. The church of SS. Peter and Paul, erected by three brothers of the Templer family in 1787, is an edifice of stone in a debased form of Early English, consisting of nave with apse, transept, west porch, and a western tower with shingled spire containing 2 bells; the first, dated 1701, has a banding of grapes and vine leaves: over the communion table is an oil painting of a “Pieta,” being a copy of the original, by Vandyke, in the museum at Antwerp: in the Templer family pew is another painting of the “Presentation in the Temple”: there are mural monuments to various members of the Templer family: the church was thoroughly renovated in 1872 at the expense of the 12th Duke of Somerset K.G. and affords 115 sittings. The register dates from the year 1681. The living is a rectory, net yearly income £194, including 65 acres of glebe, in the gift of Harold St. Maur esq. and held since 1897 by the Rev. Arthur Augustus Woollcombe M.A. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford. There are charities of £60 yearly, left many years ago, and now expended in supporting the National School and in providing clothing for the poor. The ground of the Teignbridge Cricket Club is in this parish. Stover Lodge, the seat of Harold St. Maur esq. D.L., J.P. pleasantly situated on an eminence in an extensive and well-wooded park, with a lake of ornamental water, is a structure of Haytor granite, with a portico of Portland stone, built by James Templer esq. in 1776, and purchased by Edward Adolphus, 11th Duke of Somerset, in 1829, from the late George Templer esq.: the principal entrance to the park is on the main road from Exeter to Plymouth, where there are two lodges connected by a colonnade of fluted pillars, each consisting of a single block of stone. H. St. Maur esq. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The Stover Golf Club have a good course of 18 holes, situated on the borders of the parish, adjoining Highweek, and also a commodious club house. The soil is light loam; subsoil is chiefly clay and yellow sand. The crops are grain, mangold wurtzel and potatoes. The area is 1,447 acres of land, 49 of water and 3 of tidal water; rateable value, £2,727; the population in 1901 was 190.
