Historical Description
TETCOTT is a parish and village near the confluence of the rivers Tamar and Claw and the Cornwall border, 5 ¼ miles south from Holsworthy station on a branch of the London and South Western railway, in the Western division of the county, Black Torrington hundred, Holsworthy petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Holsworthy, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of the Holy Cross is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south transept, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing one bell, cast in 1717: up to Aug. 1811 there were 3 bells, but a licence was then obtained from the bishop to sell two bells, one of which was broken, to defray the expense of repairs to the church: in the transept there is a marble monument, with arms of Sir Shilston Calmady kt. sheriff of the county, ob. 25 Sept. 1675, and to his wife, ob. Oct. 1699; there is also a marble tablet to John Arscott, of Tetcott, d. Jan. 1788, and a dilapidated monument to John Arscott esq. and his two wives, dated from 1675 to 1708: the font is Norman, and there is a carved oak pulpit: the chancel was restored by the late rector, to whose memory a small stained window was inserted by his family, on the south side of the nave in 1881: the rood screen, existing here in 1858, has now disappeared: the church was restored in 1874—6 at a cost of £600, and affords 200 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1600; marriages and burials, 1599. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £110, including 64 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1881 by the Rev. Herbert Upton Squire, of St. Aidans, who is also vicar of Clawton. Here is a Bible Christian chapel. A small charity of £2 10s. is distributed in clothing to the poor. Mrs. Richard Ford, of 17 Park street, Park lane, London W. is lady of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 1,716 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £817; the population in 1901 was 187.
By Local Government Board Order, 14,691, a detached part of Tetcott, including East Peake, was transferred to Luffincott, March 22, 1883.
This place is included in the United School Board district of Clawton, Tetcott & Luffincott, formed Aug. 31, 1874.
Board School (mixed), Lana, formerly used as a club-room & leased from the late Lady Molesworth & enlarged & converted into a school house in 1876, for 140 children; average attendance, 50.
