Historical Description
THORNBURY is a scattered parish on the small river Waldron, 4 ½ miles north from Dunsland Cross station on the Holsworthy branch of the London and South Western railway and 5 north-east from Holsworthy, in the Western division of the county, Black Torrington hundred, Holsworthy petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Holsworthy, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Peter, dedicated in 1339, is a building of stone in mixed styles, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south transept, south porch, and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles at the angles, containing 5 bells, recast in 1876 from a previous peal of 3, of which the first two were dated respectively 1779 and 1639: the south porch retains a fine Norman doorway and the north aisle a piscina: in the transept is a monument to Sir John Speccott, knighted at Greenwich, 2 June, 1604, and Elizabeth (Edgcombe), his 1st wife; it consists of a high tomb with recumbent effigies in alabaster finely executed, with four kneeling figures of their children, and a shield of arms of Edgcombe quartering Dernford, Bigbury and Walter: the church was restored in 1876 at a cost of £1,200, when the tower was raised 5 feet, and two stained windows, the gift of the late Rev. William Edgcombe B.A. rector 1840—88 and his sisters, inserted in the chancel: there are 250 sittings: a new boundary wall to the churchyard was built in 1896. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1652; burials, 1653. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £171, including 106 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Joseph Graham esq. K.C. and held since 1892 by the Rev. Henry George Smith-Heriz M.A. of Hertford College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1891, with 120 sittings. Joseph Graham esq. K.C., J.P. of Manor Cottage, who is lord of the manor, Mr. William Routley and Messrs. Daniel and Samuel Hutchings are the principal landowners. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 2,848 acres; rateable value, £1,436; the population in 1901 was 291.
