Historical Description

THORVERTON is a parish and village about a mile east of the river Exe, with a station on the Exe Valley branch of the Great Western railway, 7 miles north from Exeter, 6 east-by-north from Crediton and 8 south from Tiverton, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hayridge hundred, Cullompton petty sessional division, Tiverton union and county court district, rural deanery of Cadbury and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The Exe Valley railway, opened in May, 1885, is the property of the Great Western Railway Company, and connects the main line at Stoke Canon with the Devon and Somerset branch near Dulverton. The church of St. Thomas a Becket, an ancient building in the Gothic style, consists of chancel, nave, aisles, transept, south porch and a western tower containing a clock and 8 bells, dated respectively 1861, 1674, 1673 (4 and 6), the fifth 1662 and the others 1894, in which year two treble bells were added at a cost of about £85, as a memorial to the late Mr. Arthur Felix Risdon, churchwarden; the bells have been re-hung at a cost of £113: there are some ancient monuments to the Tuckfield family and modern stained windows: one of the bench ends bears the arms of the Luttrell family, and on another is a shield with the arms of Wallis impaling Gilbert: two other shields are carved with emblems of husbandry and the figure of a horse: the church was restored in 1864 by the Ven. Archdeacon Freeman, when a transept was added and the interior elaborately fitted, every seat, both in the nave and chancel, being carved: in 1887 a warming apparatus was erected at a cost of £100, defrayed by Mrs. M. A. Commings; and a vestry has since been erected: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1725. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £328, including 27 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Frank Ley Bazeley M.A. of Christ College, Cambridge. The chapel of St. Martin, at Northdown, was erected by private subscription on a site presented by Martin Pasmore esq. Here is a Baptist chapel and a Conservative club. Fairs are held on the last Monday in February and the Monday after the 18th July, yearly, for lambs and cattle. This place is noted for its breed of sheep and produce of apricots. There are charities of £100 yearly value, distributed in money and kind. Goldford was the property of the late Sir H. Carew; the late Dowager Lady Carew having resided for many years at the Barton House. The manor anciently belonged to the abbey of Marmoustier in Normandy, but was purchased from that community by Sir John Wiger, and given by him in 1276 to the Dean and Chapter of Exeter. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor and impropriators of the great tithe, Sir John Shelley bart. of Shobrooke Park, Charles Fursdon esq. of Cadbury, and Martin William Pasmore esq. of Newton St. Cyres, are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey and sandy; the subsoil, red rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley and apples. The area is 4,074 acres of land and 18 of water; rateable value, £6,061; the population in 1901 was 813.

National School (mixed & infants), built in 1845, with master’s residence, built by the Rev. Samuel Childs Clarke M.A. late vicar of the parish, partly supported by a small endowment from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners; the school will hold 190 children; average attendance, 150.
