Historical Description
THROWLEIGH (or Throwley) is a parish and village near the high road from Exeter to Okehampton, 7 miles south-east from Okehampton station on the main line of the London, and South Western railway, 17 west from Exeter, in the Mid division of the county, Wonford hundred, Crockernwell petty sessional division, Okehampton union and county court district, rural deanery of Okehampton, archdeaconry of Totnes and Exeter diocese. The church of St. Mary is a building of granite, in the Early Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle with an arcade of four arches, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower, with pinnacles and containing 5 bells: the roof of the chancel is wagon vaulted, with good carved oak panelling and bosses: the priests’ door is a richly ornamented work of the 13th century: on the south side of the chancel is a sepulchral recess: there are memorial windows to the Dunnings of Barton and the Aysh family: in 1884 the church was reseated and refloored, the tower arch opened, and the bells rehung, at a cost of £400, and further restored in 1890 at a cost of £501: there are 180 sittings. In commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of her late Majesty Queen Victoria in 1897, a new shaft and head have been raised on the base of the ancient cross by the rector and a parishioner. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1653; marriages, 1654. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £120, including 9 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1895 by the Rev. George Lincoln Gambier Lowe B.A. of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. The mission church at MURCHINGTON, in connection with St. Mary's, is a building of granite, erected in 1889 at a cost of £400, and consists of chancel, nave and a western turret containing one bell: an oak pulpit, granite font and a lectern were provided about 1897: the church will seat 100 persons. Services are held here on Sunday afternoons, and morning services on the 2nd Sunday in each month. There is a Bible Christian chapel at Providence Place, built in 1839, and has a burial ground attached. The charities, amounting to £4 13s. yearly, are applied to the repair of the church. James Dunning, of Wonson, who is lord of the manor, Richard Dunning, of Barton. James and Richard Gay Crocker, of Forder, Alfred Guy Whipham esq. of Gidleigh Park, and the Rev. Dr. J. G. Dangar, principal of the Exeter Training College, are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy; the subsoil is rocky granite. The crops are wheat, barley, oats and pasture. The area is 2,976 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £2,150; the population in 1901 was 241.
A School Board of 5 members was formed Jan. 11, 1875, for the united district of Throwleigh & Gidleigh; W. Perryman, Yeo Mills, Chagford R.S.O. clerk to the board & attendance officer.
