Withleigh History

WITHLEIGH, 3 miles west, was formed into an ecclesiastical parish in 1886. The church of St. Katherine, built in 1846, in place of an ancient chapel of the same name, licensed July 2, 1400, is an edifice of stone in a plain Gothic style, consisting of chancel and nave, south porch and a turret with one bell; the east window is stained; a vestry was added on the north side, in 1897, by John Carpenter esq. and other friends; there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1847. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £292, in the alternate gift of William Spurway esq. and the Rev. Sir Vyell D. Vyvyan bart. and held since 1886 by the Rev. Richard Medland Germon B.A. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford.
