Historical Description

TOPSHAM is a market town, parish and seaport and fishing station within the jurisdiction of the port of Exeter, on the east bank of the navigable river Exe, into which the river Clyst flows from the east and forms the boundary of the township on that side. Over the Clyst is a stone bridge of five arches, leading to Clyst St. George; it has a station on the Exmouth branch of the London and South Western railway, and is 4 miles south-east from Exeter, 6 north-west from Exmouth and 177 from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, Wonford hundred and petty sessional division, St. Thomas union, Exeter county court district, rural deanery of Aylesbeare and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The town is on the direct road from Exeter to Exmouth, and is paved and lighted with gas. The civil parish includes the ecclesiastical parish of Countess Wear or Weir. The church of St. Margaret is a spacious edifice of stone, in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, aisles, south-east porch and an embattled tower on the south side, containing a clock and 6 bells, dated respectively 1778, 1709, 1640 and 1750 (2): in the south transept are two marble monuments, by Chantrey, to Admiral Sir John Thomas Duckworth bart. G.C.B, ob. Aug. 31, 1817, erected by his widow, and to the admiral’s son, Col. George Henry Duckworth, who fell at the battle of Albuera, 16th May, 1811: the east window is a memorial to the Rev. Henry Thorp M.A. for 30 years rector here, d. Feb. 13, 1857, and to Margaret Courtney, his wife: the west window is a memorial to William Rookes and Catherine, his wife, and was erected by their son William in 1877; there are others to the Ross, Griffiths, Brent and Roos families, and a fine brass eagle lectern, presented in memory of Richard Pennell, who died May 4, 1797, by his children: the font is ancient and has a handsome brass cover, the gift of the late Rev. Henry T. Ellacombe M.A. 1880, some time rector of Clyst St. George: the church was entirely rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, during the period 1869—78, at a cost of £8,550, from designs by Mr. Edward Ashworth, architect, of Exeter: there are 984 sittings. The register dates from the year 1600. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £282, including 28 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter, and held since 1880 by the Rev. John Bartlett M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. The Church Mission hall in Victoria place (formerly a Unitarian chapel) affords 350 sittings. The Congregational chapel, Victoria place, is a plain building, erected in 1839, and has 350 sittings. The Wesleyan chapel, Fore street, erected in 1864, at a cost of £3,000, in place of one built in 1818 and now used as an infants’ school, is a building of limestone, with sittings for 500 persons: at the back is a mission room, with 200 sittings. The Wesleyan Reform Chapel is in Chapel court. A Cemetery of 2 ¼ acres, with two mortuary chapels and caretaker’s house, was formed in 1855 and is now under the control of the parish council. The Vestry hall, in Fore street, built in 1886, is a structure of Ted brick, and is used for parish purposes. The Victoria Pier and Promenade was erected in 1887. The entrance for vessels into the ship canal from this place to Exeter is at Turf, on the side of the river Exe opposite to the town. The quays, building yards and waterside premises are principally the property of Messrs. Holman and the town council of Exeter. The only factory here is that of Messrs. George Hopewell and Co. engineers. A fair is held on the Thursday preceding the 19th of July annually, for pedlery. There are numerous charities amounting to about £250 yearly. Grove Hill is the residence of Robert Manning Davy esq. J.P. and The Retreat, the seat of Alexander Kelso Hamilton esq. D.L., J.P. Col. Sir Dudley Gordon Alan Duckworth-King bart. of Wear House, A. K. Hamilton esq. and Ivor Macpherson esq. are the chief landowners. The soil in the neighbourhood is light; the subsoil is gravel and sand rock. The area is 1,584 acres of land, 4 of water, 89 of tidal water and 373 of foreshore; rateable value, £11,129; the population in 1891 was 2,833 in the civil and 2,447 in the ecclesiastical parish; the population of the civil parish in 1901 was 2,780.
