Historical Description
TORBRYAN is a parish and village, 3 miles north-east from Staverton station on the Ashburton branch, 4 west from Kingskerswell station on the Torquay branch of the South Devon section of the Great Western railway, and 4 south-by-west from Newton Abbot, in the Mid division of the county, Haytor hundred, Teignbridge petty sessional division, Newton Abbot union, Newton Abbot and Torquay county court district, rural deanery of Moreton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. By Local Government Board Order 16,369, the civil parish of Denbury was amalgamated with this parish and by Order, 16,367, Bremridge was added from Ipplepen, March 25, 1885, and by Order 16,367, Morley cottages & Littlejoy farm were transferred from Torbryan to Highweek, March 25, 1884. The church of the Holy Trinity is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, separated from the nave by arcades of five arches, chapel, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 4 bells, with inscriptions in Old English and Roman characters, the first two inscriptions being confusedly arranged: the chancel retains a piscina, and there is one at the east end of each aisle: a magnificent carved oak screen, richly ornamented with fan tracery, divides the nave and chancel: the pulpit and the communion table are also very fine specimens of carved cak: in the south aisle is a, stone staircase leading to the ancient entrance to the rood loft: in 1887 the organ was restored and removed to the north chapel, at the cost of the rector: the stained east window contains some very good old glass: the communion plate of silver dates from the 17th century: there are 250 sittings: in the churchyard, entered by an old lych gate, are the base and part of the shaft of a large stone cross of ancient date, and also a yew tree planted in 1715 by the Rev. Edward Goswell, then rector. The register of baptisms, marriages and burials dates from the year 1564. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £165, including 17 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of and held since 1863 by the Rev. Charles Wolston LL.B, of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The poor have 20s. yearly, left by John Petre in 1370. There are no manorial rights. The principal landowners are Mrs. Ley, Daniel Robert Scratton esq. of Ogwell, Newton Abbot, and the rector. The soil is red loam; subsoil, sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and other forage. The area, including Denbury, is 3,002 acres; rateable value, £4,202; the population, including Denbury, in 1901 was 456, and in the ecclesiastical parish, 153.
This place is included in the Denbury & Torbryan United School Board district, formed March 29, 1897, D. R. Scratton, Ogwell, clerk to the board. The children of this parish attend the school at Denbury.
