Banns registers list the names of people who intended to marry by the system of calling banns, in which the bride and groom's name were called for three weeks at church. Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
TRUSHAM is a parish and village on the river reign, one mile north-east from Trusham station on the reign Valley branch of the Great Western railway, 8 south-west from Exeter, 4 north-east from Bovey Tracey and 8 north from Newton Abbot, in the Mid division of the county, Exminster hundred, Teignbridge petty sessional division, Newton Abbot union, Newton Abbot and Torquay county court district, rural deanery of Moreton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Michael, erected in 1259 and the aisle added in 1430, is an ancient building of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles with traces of Norman work, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, separated from the nave by an arcade of three arches, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells, dating from 1431 to 1897: the church was thoroughly restored in 1865, when the stained east window and a smaller one were inserted as memorials to the Rev. William Edward Brendon, who died in 1864; and there are others to Mrs. Cotgrave, d. 1849, and R. E. F. Cotgrave, d. 1873, and to the wife of the Rev. O. H. Cary, rector: a painting in panels, dated 1583, with the arms of Stapenhill, occupies part of the north chancel wall, where also are monuments to the Stooke family, 1677—97: in the chancel there is a Late Norman piscina and a Norman font: the rood screen, the uprights of which date from the year 1431, was restored in 1890 at the cost of the present rector: there are 138 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £150, including 59 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir E. R. T. Pole bart. and held since 1888 by the Rev. Ofley Henry Cary M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. There are almshouses for poor people in the parish, formerly endowed with the rents of 100 acres of land in the parish of Christow, left by John Stooke in 1688, and amounting to £40 yearly: this property has been purchased by the Torquay Corporation and the proceeds invested in seurities producing £60 per annum. A charity of £4 is annually distributed in doles; another of £18, vested in landed property, is for the support of the school; and in 1884 an anonymous donor gave £50 to be invested for the poor. This village is noted for the delightful views in its neighbourhood. The Commercial Union Insurance Company, who are lords of the manor, and the Earl of Morley are the principal landowners. The soil is light loam; the subsoil is chiefly stone brash. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 618 acres of land and 7 of water; rateable value, £874; the population in 1901 was 165.
By a Local Government Board Order, 16,368, which came into operation March 25, 1884, a detached part of this parish, known as Lower Bramble and Middle Bramble, was amalgamated with Ashton in St. Thomas union.
National School (mixed), erected in 1878, for 60 children; average attendance, 45.
