Banns registers list the names of people who intended to marry by the system of calling banns, in which the bride and groom's name were called for three weeks at church. At these callings objections could be made to a marriage. Thus they record any intended marriages that didn't occur.

Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
UFFCULME is a market town and parish, pleasantly seated on the river Culm, with a station on the Culm Valley branch of the Great Western railway, and is 5 miles north-east-by-north from Cullompton, 7 east from Tiverton by road and about 178 from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred of Bampton, petty sessional division of Cullompton, union and county court district of Tiverton, rural deanery of East Tiverton and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The town is lighted with gas from works the property of Mr. Ellis Curwood and Messrs. Fox Brothers and Co. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a building of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and a western tower, with spire, containing a clock and 6 bells, cast in 1801 from a previous peal of 5, but at the rebuilding of the tower in 1847 the tenor was re-cast by Messrs. Mears, of London, at the expense of the late Richard Marker esq. and weighs 24 cwts.: the church retains a richly-carved rood screen, one of the finest in the county, and has several mural monuments to the Walrond, Windsor and Marker families: in the north aisle or Walrond chapel are two ancient monuments, on one of which, a high tomb, are three demi-effigies, richly coloured, of a man and his wife, and between these a youth; the two former holding books and the latter a skull: the side of the tomb is panelled and exhibits two similar busts of males; on the margin are some Latin sentences and the date, 1663, and on the upper slab four rhyming lines in English; the shields on the tomb displays the arms of Walrond, Kelleway and Speccott; on the ledge of the window above lies a fine recumbent male effigy in armour and wearing a flowing wig: in the churchyard is a lych gate of stone: the church was restored in 1890 at a cost of £500, and will seat 800 persons. The register of baptisms dates from 1543; burials from the 15th December, 1538; and marriages from 1539. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £312, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1897 The Rev. Walter Allen Lewis M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Rev. Henry Bramley, late vicar and sub-dean of Exeter, receives a yearly pension from the living of £112. The great and small tithes are commuted at £1,020 19s. 9d. the former being in the hands of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. There are two district chapels: one, a building of stone, was erected at Bradfield, in 1875, by the late Sir J. W. Walrond, at a cost of £3,000, and consists of nave and chancel, with sittings for 120 persons; attached to the chapel is a burial ground: the other, in the hamlet of Ashill, erected in 1882, at a cost of £1,400, is an edifice of brick with stone dressings, and consists of nave and chancel, with sittings for 150 persons. The church room, erected to commemorate the Jubilee in 1887 of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, is fitted with a large stage, and has an annexed class-room: it will seat 350 persons. The Congregational chapel at Cold Harbour, erected in 1720 and rebuilt in 1862, is an edifice in the Gothic style, and will seat 250 persons; a Sunday school was built in 1892. The Baptist chapel, erected in 1743, and enlarged in 1834, was restored in 1897, at a cost of £500, and has 200 sittings: there is also a small Baptist chapel at Ashill, seating 100. A cemetery of acres, part of which is consecrated, was provided in 1882 at a cost of £1,000, and is under the management of the Parish Council. A market was granted to this place in 1266; markets are held bi-monthly on second Monday in February, April, June, August and October, and the first Monday in December. The woollen factory of Messrs. Fox Brothers and Co. Limited, of Wellington, employs about 170 persons; there is also a brewery, belonging to the trustees of the late Mr. William Furze, and there are flour mills in the parish. Charities amounting to about £75 are distributed yearly by trustees and the vicar and churchwardens. Bradfield, the seat of Col. the Right Hon. Sir William Hood Walrond bart, P.C., M.P., V.D., D.L., J.P. is a noble and ancient mansion of the 16th century, with some curiously ornamented rooms and is surrounded by extensive grounds. Grantlands, the residence of the Rev. Stephen Bennett M.A. was erected in 1865; Craddock House is the seat of John Cave New esq. D.L., J.P.; Gaddon House, of William Talley Wood esq.; Craddock Cleve is the residence of Lieut.-Col. James Johnstone. William Talley Wood esq. is lord of the manor of Gaddon. Col. the Right Hon. Sir William Hood Walrond bart. P.C., M.P., J. C. New esq. Richard Hall Clarke esq. of Bridwell House, Arthur Ayshford Wood esq. of Tiverton, John Garnsey Pedler esq. of Sampford Peverell and John Francis Wood and Robert Warren Venn esqrs. and Mrs. Partridge are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly light and sandy, and has a gravelly subsoil. The parish is principally pasture for dairy purposes; the crops are barley, wheat, and oats. The area is 6,134 acres of land and 24 of water; rateable value, £11,199; population in 1901 was 1,704.
SCHOOLS
The Grammar School, founded in 1701 by Mr. Nicholas Ayshford, of Taunton, has an endowment of £40 a year; after having been for some time in abeyance, it was reopened in 1890 under a new scheme of the Charity Commissioners as a preparatory school for boys between 7 & 15 years of age; the buildings at present include the school house, with school & class rooms, dormitories for 30 boys, dining hall & library, fives court & a detached sanatorium; boys educated at this school are eligible for several of the entrance scholarships at Blundell’s school, Tiverton; Henry Chichele Prideaux M.A. late scholar of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, headmaster.
