The church (dedication uncertain), formerly attached to Plympton Priory, is a fine old building, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of granite, aisles, north porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 8 bells: the tower was struck by lightning in 1872, when one of the pinnacles was thrown down and large stones hurled to a considerable distance: the font is Norman, and there are some remains of ancient screen work, including a fairly good rood and a parclose: the former, which has thirty-two painted panels, has been cut down to the level of the seats: the church has 670 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £330, including 52 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Grocers’ Company, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Wm. Edwd. Windle M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. Here is a Congregational chapel, and there is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel at Bittaford Bridge. The reading room here is maintained by subscriptions. 50s. is distributed yearly from Sir J. Fowell’s charity. The manor anciently belonged to the Briweres and afterwards to the Mohuns. The Carew family are now lords of the manor; and Mrs. Craig, the Misses Pearse Sawyer and C. A. Wroth, Nicholas Rowe and A. J. White esqrs. and F. J. Cornish-Bowden esq. of Black Hall, Avonwick, are the chief landowners. The soil is loamy; the subsoil is various. The chief crops are corn and turnips, a considerable portion of the parish being pasture. The area is 8,945 acres of land, including about 3,000 acres of moor land and 10 of water; rateable value, £1,640; the population in 1891 was 1,443 in the civil and 1,224 in the ecclesiastical parish. Part of the village of Avonwick is in this parish.

The Plymouth Borough Asylum, Blackadon, erected at a cost of about £50,000 & opened November, 1891, for private & pauper patients, is a structure of granite & red brick & comprises workshops & a chapel, in which services are conducted by the Rev. G. W. Anstiss B.A. vicar of Ivybridge & chaplain to the asylum; the asylum is adapted for 250 patients & has now (1901) 240: the estate comprises 75 acres, of which about 25 acres are covered by the asylum buildings & the remainder used as a farm & recreation ground: the asylum is under the control of the Plymouth county council & is managed by a visiting committee of 25 members of the council; J. H. Ellis, town clerk of Plymouth, is clerk to the committee.

A School Board of 5 members was formed July 16, 1874; Edward Windeatt, Church lane, Totnes, clerk to the board; John Smerdon, school attendance officer.
