Uplyme Banns (1758-1915)

Historical Description

UPLYME is a parish and large scattered village pleasantly situated at the eastern extremity of Devon, and 1 mile west from Lyme Regis, in Dorsetshire, of which town it is a suburb; 4 miles south-east from Axminster station on the London and South Western railway and 9 west from Bridport, in the Eastern division of the county, Axminster hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dunkeswell and Honiton and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of SS. Peter and Paul, picturesquely seated in a secluded valley, is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, with some Decorated work, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a low embattled tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells: the church was thoroughly restored in 1876, and affords 350 sittings. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1710; burials, 1691. The living is a rectory, net yearly income £271, with residence and 36 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Ethelston trustees, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Alfred Watlington Parke M.A. of the University of Oxford. The Brethren have a small chapel at Harcombe, and there is also a Wesleyan chapel at Rocombe. In 1850 a Roman bath, with a beautiful tesselated pavement, was discovered here. Rhode Hill the seat of John Reginald Francis George Talbot esq. J.P. is a conspicuous building, standing in very beautiful grounds of about 40 acres. Wood House, the seat of Mrs. Prescott, is a mansion of brick in the Gothic style, on an eminence about half a mile north-west of the village. J. R. F. G. Talbot esq. who is lord Regis, who is lord of the manor, Walton Allhusen esq. of Clevelands, Lyme Regis, Dorset, the trustees of the Ethelston family and R. R. Holland esq. are chief landowners. The soil is mixed; the subsoil is chalky and limy. Here are large beds of blue and red lias. The crops are wheat, roots and pasturage. The area is 3,584 acres of land and 54 of foreshore; rateable value, £4,795; the population in 1891 was 830 in the civil and 756 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order 15,946, the tithing of Shapwick was added to this parish from Axminster, March 24, 1884.

National School (mixed), erected at the cost of Mrs. Ethelston, & supported in part by the trustees of the Ethelston family, for 120 children; average attendance 100.
