Historical Description

UPTON PYNE is a parish and village on the Thorverton road, miles south from Brampford Speke station on the Exe Valley branch of the Great Western railway, and 3 north from Exeter, in the North Eastern division of the county, East Wonford hundred, Wonford petty sessional division, St. Thomas union, Exeter county court district, rural deanery of Cadbury and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary the Virgin, consecrated September 26, 1328, is a building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 6 bells, 5 of which were cast by Thomas Bilbie in 1755 and a sixth added by the Upton Pyne Ringing Society in 1881: the fine reredos was erected as a memorial to the late Earl of Iddesleigh by the dowager countoss and incloses an ancient altar-piece, representing the “Last Supper,” and there is a carved pulpit and other works by Hems, of Exeter: in the church is a monument with recumbent effigy in armour to Edmund Larder, a former owner of Pynes, dated 1611: here are numerous tablets to the Stafford, Slanning and Northcote families and memorial windows to Sir Stafford Henry Northcote bart. d. 17 March, 1851; his eldest son Henry, d. 1850; the 1st Earl of Iddesleigh P.C., G.C.B, d. 1887; to the Hon. Mrs. Hugh Oliver Northcote, d. 1887, and to the Rev. Charles Stafford Northcote and his wife, erected by their daughter Selina in 1892; there is also a memorial, representing in tile-work the “Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary,” erected to Alice Caroline (Owen), first wife of the Hon. and Rev. Arthur Francis Northcote, vicar of St. Gregory, Canterbury, d. 1878, and to Mary Arabella (Toler), his second wife: the church was thoroughly restored, new-roofed, reseated and an organ aisle added in 1874—5 from designs by Mr. William White, architect, of London, at a total cost of £1,920; a new organ was erected in 1896 at a cost of £100, in memory of the late Mr. Noah England, for 40 years schoolmaster of Upton Pyne: the church affords 250 sittings: the lych gate at the entrance of the churchyard was erected by Lady Northcote in 1875, and over the grave of the late Earl of Iddesleigh is a memorial erected in 1890, and executed by Hems and Sons, of Exeter. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1673; burials and marriages, 1688. The living is a rectory, net yearly income £360, including 90 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Earl of Iddesleigh C.B. and held since 1900 by the Rev. Arthur Hillyard M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford. Dr. John Walker, author of the “Sufferings of the Clergy,” was was buried in the church. The charities amount to £6 inducted to this living in 1720; he died in 1746, and yearly. The Upton Pyne Club, established in 1875 by the Rev. the Hon. J. Stafford Northcote, rector here 1881—9, for the benefit of the working men of the village, comprises a reading room supplied with the local papers &c. bagatelle table and various games, and has also a small library: there are about 70 members, who pay a yearly subscription. A school library of about 120 volumes is maintained at the parsonage. Pynes, the seat of the Earl of Iddesleigh C.B. is a large and noble mansion, originally built from designs by Inigo Jones, and much enlarged in 1851; it stands on an eminence, commanding a view of the surrounding country, in a picturesque well-wooded park of 80 acres. The Earl of Iddesleigh C.B. who is lord of the manor, and Edmund C. Roberts esq. of London, are chief landowners. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are grain. The area is 2,425 acres of land and 21 of water; rateable value, £5,067; the population in 1891 was, ecclesiastical parish, 367; civil parish in 1901, including Cowley, 416.
