Historical Description
VIRGINSTOWE is a parish near the river Carey, 2 miles north from Tower Hill station on the Launceston branch of the London and South Western railway, 7 north-east from Launceston (Cornwall) and 10 south from Holsworthy, in the Western division of the county, Lifton hundred and petty sessional division, Launceston union and county court district, rural deanery of Trigg Major, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Bridget is a building in the Early English style, entirely rebuilt in 1845 at a cost of £560, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a western bell-cote containing 1 bell, dated 1664: the church will seat 100 persons. The register dates from the year 1755. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £82, including 54 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Montagu Russell Butler. Here is a Free Methodist chapel, erected in 1862. John Albert Rundle Perkin esq. of Tower hill, Broadwood Widger, and Messrs. Thomas Harris and Thomas Veale are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 287 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £892; the population in 1901 was 115.
This place is included in the United School Board district of Broadwood Widger & Virginstowe, formed July 6, 1874, & the children attend the Ivy House school, Broadwood-Widger.
