Historical Description

WALKHAMPTON is a parish and village near the valley of the Walkham, on the border of Dartmoor, 2 miles east from the Horrabridge station on the Tavistock and Launceston branch of the South Devon section of the Great Western railway, 10 ½ north from Plymouth and 5 south-east from Tavistock, in the Western division of the county, Roborough hundred, Midland Roborough petty sessional division, Tavistock union and county court district, rural deanery of Tavistock, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church (not dedicated) stands on an elevated position about half a mile north-east from the village, and is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with four octagonal crested pinnacles, richly crocketed and terminating in crosses; the tower contains 6 bells: within the church are two image brackets, one on the north wall of the chancel, and another at the east end of the nave: the font has an octagonal basin, the sides of which are relieved by blank shields, and the pedestal is ornamented with quatrefoils: in 1861 the interior was thoroughly restored at a cost of £750, and in 1872 the chancel was decorated in memory of the Hon. Bertha (Buller), wife of Sir Massey Lopes, bart. who died 13th January, 1872: the east window is stained, and there is an oak reredos: on April 6th, 1889, the north-east pinnacle of the tower was struck by lightning, the roof completely wrecked and other portions of the church damaged: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1675. The living is a vicarage, net yearly income £167, with residence and 22 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Right Hon. Sir Massey Lopes bart. P.C. and held since 1863 by the Rev. Charles Henry Walker M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. The church house, near the churchyard, has a good roof of ancient oak, and the house bears the initials “R. S. J. W.” and the date 1598. There is a small Wesleyan chapel here. The poor have nearly £14 yearly from the “Maristow” charity, which sum is distributed in clothing. Here are extensive granite quarries. Gnatham, now a farm house, was the residence of the Dunning family, afterwards Barons Ashburton. The Right Hon. Sir Massey Lopes bart. P.C. of Maristow, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil varies; subsoil, rocky. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and much land in pasture. The area is 9,999 acres, including moorland, and 12 of water; cultivated area, 3,903 acres; rateable value, £3,939; the population in 1891 was 606 in the civil and 581 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Free School (mixed), built & endowed by Elizabeth (Slanning), widow of Sir James Modyford bart. in 1719; it has a residence for the master & was enlarged in 1863 & rebuilt in 1895, & provides both education & clothing for 40 boys & 20 girls, on condition that they attend the village church & are brought up in the doctrines of the Church of England; the endowment consisted of 162 acres of land, which in 1879 produced about £160 yearly; there was also at this time a surplus of £1,100, which has been invested; it will hold 140 children; average attendance, 62 boys & 33 girls.
