Historical Description

WASHFIELD is a parish and village, on the river Exe, commanding a pleasant prospect of the country, and is 2 ½ miles north-west from Tiverton station on the Exe Valley branch of the Great Western railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, West Budleigh hundred, Cullompton petty sessional division, Tiverton union and county court district, rural deanery of West Tiverton and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary is an ancient edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells, dating from 1787 to 1901; both the tower and bells were restored in 1900—01, at a cost of £500: there is a very ancient Norman font and a richly-carved Jacobean screen, dated 1624 and made by Henry Sebright: on the wall of the north aisle is a brass with kneeling effigies of Henry Worth esq. ob. 3 Aug. 1606, his wife and daughter, with a shield of arms, and at the foot a Latin inscription: there is also an inscribed brass, with a long rhyming epitaph and two shields of arms, to Alice (Frye), wife of Philip Steynings esq. ob. 8 Aug. 3605, 9 sons and 5 daughters, erected by her son-in-law, George Montgomery; and several monuments: the church was restored in 1874 at a cost of about £1,000, and in Feb. 1891 a flagstaff and weathercock were placed on the tower by the rector and the churchwarden, Mr. Robert Morgan: there are 130 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £220, including 35 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of Mrs. Lloyd-Worth, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Charles Hesketh Knowlys M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There are charities of over £40 yearly value. Worth House, pleasantly situated, is the property of Mrs. de Las Casas. The Worth estate which had been the property and residence of the elder branch of the Worth family since the first half of the 12th century, was sold in the years 1877 and 1888. Higher Pitt belongs to Mr. Henry Gale; North Windbow and Headon to Mr. A. Ayre; Hatswell to Mr. William Trebble and Easterlands to Edwin Harris Dunning esq. Mrs. de Las Casas, who is lady of the manor, Edwin Harris Dunning esq. of Easterlands and Stoodleigh Court, and Messrs. Payne and Critchett are the chief landowners. The soil is light; subsoil, partly clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and grass. The area is 3,294 acres of land and 16 of water; rateable value, £3,586; the population in 1901 was 332.
