Historical Description
WELCOMBE is a parish and village on the extreme borders of Devon and adjoining Cornwall on the south, its greatest breadth being towards the coast of Bude bay, which at this point is extremely grand; it is 17 miles south-west from Bideford station on the Torrington branch and 14 north-west from Holsworthy terminal station on a branch of the London and South Western railway, and 10 north from Stratton (Cornwall), in the North Western division of the county, Hartland hundred, Bideford petty sessional division and union, county court district of Holsworthy, rural deanery of Hartland, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The road from Bideford to Bude passes along the borders of the parish. The church of St. Nectan is an ancient cruciform edifice of stone of the 12th or 13th century, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 4 bells, of which the first and third date from 1731; the tenor was also of this date, but has been recast since the restoration of the church; the second was recast in 1790: the church retains a very beautifully carved oak screen, and over the arches of the transepts is some interesting carved work, representing on one side “the fruitful vine,” and on the other “the barren fig tree”: the church was restored in 1883—4, and has 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £190, including 117 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Crown and Lord Clinton alternately, but pro hac vice the Lord Chancellor by lapse, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Erisey John Porter M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, who resides at Dean Lodge, Morwenstowe, Cornwall. The Rev. R. S. Hawker, poet and antiquary, was 30 years curate here. Outside the churchyard gate is an ancient “Holy Well.” Here is a Wesleyan chapel. The valleys and cliffs bordering on this parish are extremely picturesque. Welcombe Mouth and Marsland Valley, referred to in Charles Kingsley’s “Westward Ho.” are especially noted for their wild and enchanting scenery. Lord Clinton is lord of the manor; Messrs. William Walker, William Hedden, John Mear How, of East Ford, Little Torrington, and the trustees of the late Richard Hedden are the chief landowners. The soil is light, resting on hard sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The parish contains 1,787 acres of land and 34 of foreshore; rateable value, £912; the population in 1901 was 150.
