Historical Description

ALVINGTON WEST (or West Allington) is a large parish, in the Totnes or Southern division of the county, Stanborough hundred, also the Stanborough and Coleridge petty sessional division, and in Kingsbridge union and county court district, rural deanery of Woodleigh, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of All Saints, which is about one mile south-west from Kingsbridge, is a fine building of stone, in the Early Perpendicular style, with some remains of earlier work in the chancel, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, a chapel set apart for the Ilbert family, south porch and an embattled western tower with four pinnacles, containing 6 bells: the east window is a memorial to W. R. Ilbert esq. and the west window to the Rev. Douglas Macdonald, a former vicar: the church was restored in 1867 at a cost of £2,600, and has sittings. The registers date from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Salisbury, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Thomas Morgan Bell Salter M.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford, and surrogate. The rectorial tithes belong half to the vicar and half to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The vicarage of South Milton, formerly annexed to this living, was separated by Order in Council, June 7th, 1886. There is a small charity for the repair of the church and other charitable purposes, and another for sick and second poor, left by Dame Ilbert. The ancient “Poor House” is now partly converted into a cottage, and partly into a parish room for the use of the feoffees. Here are rope works, employing 14 men and boys. Bowringsleigh, the residence since 1696 of the Ilbert family, whose representatives had formerly resided at Rill, in Buckfastleigh, is an ancient mansion, portions of which date from the 13th century, but the principal existing features are of the Early Tudor period: in the hall is an elaborate oak screen, of the time of James I. richly embossed with ebony and mahogany; the chapel, connected with the east wing of the house, which was partially destroyed by fire in 1843, contains a rich 15th century screen, brought from South Huish church: the ceilings of the reception rooms are beautiful specimens of the plaster decoration of the time of William and Mary; and there is a collection of valuable pictures: the mansion was completely restored and considerably enlarged during the years 1868—73. William Roope Ilbert esq. is lord of the manor of West Alvington and Norden; W. E. P. Bastard esq. of Lyneham, is lord of the manor of Gerston; John Square Hurrell esq. of Kingsbridge, is lord of the manor of Woolston and Oldaway. The chief landowners are W. R. Ilbert esq. J. S. Hurrell esq. and the Bastard and Pearce families. The soil is various; subsoil, slaty shale and clay. The chief crops are wheat and barley; a large quantity of the land is used for grazing. The area is 2,712 acres of land, 13 of water and 252 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,778. The population in 1901 was 433. The Ecclesiastical Parish includes portions of Kingsbridge, Dodbrooke and Churchstow.

By Local Government Board Order, 16,312, Coombe Royal was transferred to Churchstow and Addlehole to Dodbrooke, March 24, 1884.

National School (mixed), built in 1864 by the Rev. D. McDonald, then vicar, & enlarged in 1878, for 150 children; average attendance, 73.
