Historical Description

WEST BUCKLAND is a parish and village, pleasantly seated on an acclivity, miles north from Filleigh station, on the Taunton and Barnstaple branch of the Great Western railway and 6 north-west from South Great Western railway, 6 north-west from South Molton and 8 east from Barnstaple, in the Northern division of the county, Braunton hundred, South Molton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of South Molton, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Peter is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of a chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower containing 6 bells: the east window is stained: in the church are memorials of William Butterfield, d. 1777, and his wife, d. 1771: in the early part of the present century this church possessed an ornate and interesting screen, but on the rebuilding of the church it was taken down and not replaced, and in 1880, its then remaining fragments were incorporated in the screen of Swymbridge church: the church, with the exception of the tower, was entirely rebuilt about 1860, and affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1684. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £135, including 35 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Arthur Francis Basset esq. of Tehidy Park, Cornwall, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Josiah Newman M.A. of Magdalene College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. Stoodley Manor was the original seat of the Buckinghams; it is now a farm, the property of Mrs. Robertson Buckingham. Murry Thorne George esq. is lord of the manor; Earl Fortescue is chief landowner. The soil is sandy; the subsoil is skillet. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley and artificial grass. The area is 2,591 acres; rateable value, £1,357; the population in 1901 was 363.

By a Local Government Board Order, 16,344, which, came into operation March 24, 1884, a detached part of Chittlehampton parish, known as Leary, was amalgamated with this parish for civil purposes.

Schools

The Devon County School stands on high ground, 650 feet above sea level, partly in this parish & partly in that of East Buckland: the school was founded in 1861 by the late Earl Fortescue & Prebendary Brereton, to provide a public school education for boys of the middle classes of this & the adjoining counties. The buildings, erected at a cost of £12,000, are adapted for the reception of nearly 200 boarders & attached are playing fields & shrubberies, covering about 24 acres. The late Earl Fortescue also gave £1,000 to endow a chaplain to the school, at the same time rebuilding & enlarging East Buckland church for the use of the boys.

National (mixed), built in 1875, for 70 children; average attendance, 50.
