Historical Description

WEST DOWN is a parish, 3 miles south-east from Morthoe station on the Barnstaple and Ilfracombe branch of the London and South Western railway, 9 north-by-west from Barnstaple and 4 south from Ilfracombe, in the North Western division of the county, Braunton hundred and petty sessional division, Barnstaple union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of the Holy Trinity is an ancient cruciform building of stone, supposed to have been erected in the reign of Henry VII. and consisting of chancel, nave, transept, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells: in the north transept is an oaken effigy of Sir John Wyatt kt. (also called le White or de la Wayt), a Justice of the Common Pleas from 1342 to about 1372; he was born at Stowford in this parish, about 1290, and the effigy, which represents him in the robes of a sergeant-at-law, was re-coloured in 1873; the figure of Joan (Tracy), his wife, is lost: the stained east window is a memorial to Mr. Robert Hole: in the chancel are two other stained windows to the Rev. H. J. Drury, late vicar, and two members of the Davy family: the west window, a memorial to Grace, wife of James Bale, was given, in 1886, by Mrs. Fitzmaurice, her sister, who also erected a lych gate in the same year: the font, a Norman work, was found under the floor during the restoration: on the tower is a tablet recording its demolition in 1711 and rebuilding in 1712, at the cost of the parish, except a sum of £21, given by Sir Nicholas Hooper knt. of Fullabrook, who also at the same time presented the clock and its bell: the church was thoroughly restored in 1874, when the chancel walls were raised, the entire church newly roofed and re-seated with open seats and the chancel re-paved, at a total cost of £1,785: there are 230 sittings. The register dates from the year 1583. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value, from tithe rent-charge, £190, with residence and 7 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1870 by the Rev. William Chorley Loveband Theol.Assoc. K.C.L. Here are Wesleyan and Congregational chapels; the latter was endowed in 1868 by the late John Nonington, of Barnstaple, and will hold 150 persons. The poor’s lands, which yield £5 5s. yearly, have been sold and the money invested in the names of the Charity Commissioners. The principal landowners are Major John Edgcombe Loveband, who is lord of the manor of Bradwell; Miss Arundell Yeo, of Fremington, who is lady of the manor of Stowford; Col. Griffith, Russell Griffiths esq. the trustees of the late Tom Hole esq. Mrs. Parminter, Edward Anderton esq. Mrs. Basset, of Watermouth Castle, and John Chugg esq. There is no manor of West Down. The soil is clayey; subsoil, slate. The chief crops are pasture and oats. The area is 4,082 acres; assessable value, £2,760; the population in 1891 was 562.

A School Board of 5 members was formed May 17, 1888; George Mills, Barnstaple, clerk to the board.
