Historical Description
WEST OGWELL is 3 miles west from Newton Abbot station on the South Devon section of the Great Western railway, 1 mile south from the Newton and Ashburton and 2 west from the Newston and Totnes road. The church (name not known) is a very small building of stone in the Perpendicular style, the interior length, including the belfry, being only 52 feet, and the breadth across the transepts 32 feet; it consists of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells, all apparently cast in 1633: there are three sedilia and an oaken pulpit with emblazoned arms upon it: the screen, existing here at the beginning of the present century, has now disappeared: there are 80 sittings. The register dates from the year 1681. The living is a rectory, united to that of East Ogwell. Ogwell House, the residence of Daniel Robert Scratton esq. D.L., J.P. lord of the manor and principal landowner, was originally erected by Sir Thomas Reynell in 1589: of this building only the offices remain: the present residence dates from 1790, and is a handsome building of stone, standing in about 6 acres of gardens and meadow.
OGWELL is a parish formed under an Order of the County Council, by the amalgamation of East and West Ogwell parishes, in the Mid division of the county, Wonford hundred, Teignbridge petty sessional division, Newton Abbot union, Newton Abbot and Torquay county court district, rural deanery of Moreton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. East Ogwell village is 2 miles south-west from Newston Abbot station on the South Devon section of the Great Western railway. The church of St. Bartholomew is a building of stone, of mixed styles and various dates, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells, of which the first is plain but ancient; the second bears the words “Ave Maria,” in Lombardic characters, beautifully cast; the third has, in very clearly moulded characters, the legend “Voce mea viva depello cuncta nociva:” an unconsecrated south aisle or transept, built by the family of Reynell over their vault, is called the “Golgotha”: there are some ancient gravestones in the pavement and several monuments to the Reynell family: there is an early font and some remains of a screen, and on the piers are the arms of the Holbeame family: the church was restored in 1884—5, at a cost of £1,691, and affords 400 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1674; marriages, 1675. The Living is a rectory, with West Ogwell annexed, joint net yearly value £355, including 26 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Daniel Robert Scratton esq. and held since 1896 by the Rev. Oliver Brighton M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There are charities of £12 15s. yearly value, including the rent of 4 acres of land left by Sir Richard Reynell in 1735, and devoted to school purposes. In the parish is a quarry of madrepore marble. Bradley Vale is a beautiful spot often visited by lovers of fine scenery. Daniel Robert Scratton esq. J.P., D.L. of Ogwell House, is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is chiefly light red loam; the subsoil is chiefly limestone, but there are also small slate or skillett and some dunstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 2,087 acres; rateable value, £2,641; the population in 1901 was 250.
In 1885, by Local Government Board Order, 16,367, Rydon, a detached part of Wolborough, was amalgamated with this parish.
A School Board was formed on June 26, 1886, for Ogwell; D. R. Scratton, Ogwell, clerk to the board.
